Facebook's secret features!

Over the years there's no doubt that Facebook's features have developed faster than the average user can keep upwith them. Back when I first started using the social media platform, the status box pre-populated with 'is' and you had to work your status around that; photos could only be uploaded in batches of 20 and obviously there was no app or mobile access.

So anyone that's grown with Facebook would be forgiven for not being aware of all of the new features that it has these days. Unless you read the details of every new release (I'm going to hold my hands up that I don't!) then there's possibly a lot going on that you don't know about and you're not using it to it's fullest capacity.

Here are a couple of things that you might not know that Facebook can do!

1) Bookmark links.
Newsfeeds are so crowded these days that I know for me, I can often get a couple of links in a row that I want to look at but don't have time to do so right there and then. There's a little drop down box in the post in your newsfeed and one of the options is 'Save for later' That link then appears as a bookmark for you to back and view when you have time. Awesome!

2) Edit photos directly in Facebook.
To be honest, it was only until recently that I was stuffing around editing photos in my iPhone before uploading them but Facebook can now do this for you! You can add a filter, text or crop someone out of the picture once you've uploaded but before you post. It saves so much time for those of us who like our natural photos to have a filter and some quality editing done before sharing!

3) Search for specific conversations.
I've never found the Facebook search function to be particularly effective if I'm honest. Your searches had to be pretty accurate for it to bring up what you were looking for, and even after they introduced the hashtag it still didn't quite hit the spot for me. Now you can type any words into the search bar and it'll bring up any statuses or conversations that are happening around that word. It's a pretty cool way to keep up to date with what's going on in your niche, and will also make it easier for your business posts to get found too.

These are a few of my favourite hidden features; have you got any other secret Facebook tips to add to this?

Thanks for this, I had no idea about the bookmark feature which will be really useful if I remember that it's there!
I'm similar to you in that I've been a personal Facebook user for a long, long time and it's developed so much over time that it's been hard to keep up with.

My favourite 'secret' feature which I'm sure isn't the best kept secret in the world is the 'Unfollow' button. It used to cause me hours of anxiety when deciding whether or not to remove those serial food-posters from my friends list. Of course, you still care about them as a person but their incessant drivel posts drove you to distraction!
The unfollow feature means you don't have to harm any real-life relationships by de-friending someone, but you don't have to have your day interrupted with those over the top posts either.

Thanks for this post, there's always so much to learn about our favourite social media apps!

How do you think these features are going to benefit from the marketer's perspective?

But yes I did learn something new...never knew you could edit photos within Facebook.

      .

Having the ability to let your followers know that they can bookmark your posts and read them when they have more time is a tremendous benefit for marketers.

The blog posts that take people to your site, market your business and improve your SEO ranking because people are on your website for longer can often be skipped past because people are time poor.

Let them know to bookmark and come back and read them when they have more time - I think that's a GREAT feature for marketers.

Finding out what people in your niche are posting about from a quick word search speaks for itself in how valuable it is! Apart from anything, it keeps you current. PLUS knowing that your keywords can be searched on through Facebook will obviously alter the way you write statuses.

Glad you learnt something from this

#1 is always useful to me. I wouldn't have to search on facebook especially if it was a long time ago post.

I think that #3 is the most useful. It also lets out posts be seen by more people.

Ahhh, the nostalgia that the old Facebook brings. When you mentioned the status post using "Name is..." It brought back old memories. I remember my first year with facebook. How we used to add random people as friends for Mafia Wars, Cafe World, Zombie Cafe, and Farmville!
