Launching A New Blog, Wanting To Know More About Reddit

Hey Gang!

I'm going to be launching a new blog soon and I really wanted to explore using Reddit as a possible traffic source.

I think I understand the basic framework of how Reddit works (write evocative headlines and then hope for the best) but I wanted some more information on the "best practices".

Very curious to see what some warriors think!

Reddit is like any other social network, if used correctly it can generate some good traffic. If, on the other hand, you abuse it then it will bite you.

Just out of curiosity, how exactly could it "bite" me?

Redditors are very protective of Reddit. If you are perceived as a marketer then they will have you banned in a matter of seconds.

In Reddits' own words. "It is ok to be a redditor with a website, it is not ok to be a website with a reddit account."

    Hey Zachary,

Reddit can be very lucrative if you use it correctly, and very useless if you abuse it.

Some quick tips I can offer you, from my own experience:
    1) Each subreddit has different rules, and different customs/norms. Make sure you check out each subreddit individually and identify its rules and customs.
For instance, some subreddits like links to other websites, and some hate it (only like self posts).
    2) Don't be too spammy, or your reddit journey will be over before it even starts.
    3) Contribute to the community (don't think "how can I sell to these people" - think "how can I help them").
    4) Redditors hate advertisers. So be very creative, and don't come across as "I'm here just for the traffic" - or else you'll fail.

You can read more about Reddit in this article by QuickSprout.

Hope I helped at least a little bit,
    Enjoy and good luck.

Thanks for the reply, that all sounds really good.

I do have one question though:

What exactly is a subreddit?? lol

Reddit is a huge website, so it has a lot of categories.
More like tags actually, because of the big amount of them.

Fore example, consider the following subreddits:
        reddit.com/r/gaming/
        reddit.com/r/news/
        reddit.com/r/food/
        reddit.com/r/history/
        reddit.com/r/philosophy/

And so on and so on...
There are literally thousands of them.

Each one has "subscribers", which see the posts on these subreddits in their main board (just like facebook pages/groups).

Another quick tip - before you post in a subreddit, check out how active it is and how many subscribers there are (on the right sidebar of the page in a subreddit).

Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

        Good luck.

Reddit can be an EXCELLENT source of traffic for blogs. I would recommend creating a few good posts of viral content while you are working on setting up your blog (id recommend about 2-3 a day if you can manage). This will increase the Karma of your Reddit account. Karma increases how many people see, click on, and engage with your links. Some reddit threads also require you to have a certain amount of link karma. Technically you can post anything to reddit to increase your karma but I found that viral content gets the best response. Finally make sure you fully read the guidelines for each thread you post to or else you could have your posts removed which will do you no good in the long run. Hope this helps

Reddit can be used to drive huge amount of traffic to the blogs and websites if it is used properly. The redditors hate marketing and if you want to drive traffic to your blog then you need to use smart techniques. It is very easy to get banned in Reddit community.

5 Reasons Why Reddit Is King Medium For Blog Marketing - EListMania

The reason that marketers are unable to drive traffic to their blogs is that they try to change the community according to their websites rather than changing the website according to the community which in-return only get their accounts banned.

  • Thanks everyone for your responses.

I think I understand reddit a little better than I did 24 hours ago.

Here's what I think I've learned so far:

    1. Redditors HATE any kind of marketing. If they suspect you are there just for traffic and sales, you likely won't have an account for very long

    2. Examine the subreddit categories and examine the interest and potential traffic for each category. Once you have found a category with a lot of potential traffic, build a few articles or videos around those categories

    3. Write evocative headlines to capture attention

This all sounds good but I don't understand how you get traffic from a place where the people hate marketers??

Well, Zachary, the answer to your question is very simple:
Do not come on as a marketer.
Simply be a normal Reddit user, who contributes to the subreddit he's in: share a lot of different websites, images, videos, and articles, comment and participate in the disscusions, vote on other peoples shares... Some times, the websites that you share will be your own - and if you do this right you'll be rewarded with all the traffic that Reddit has to offer.

      Enjoy.

  • Yoni,

I think I kind of get it now.

Unfortunately, Reddit kind of sounds like a whole lot of work, lol

I think I'm definitely going to give it a try though

Are there any other resources you could point me in the direction of in terms of how to get traffic with reddit?

    Thanks again!

I totally agree with you Zachary - there is a lot more work involved than people usually think, but it is definitely worth a try.

If you search google for more information you'll find a lot of articles about Reddit traffic, but I gathered the 3 articles with are best in my opinion and will give you everything you need:

      QuickSpourts guide on Reddit traffic
      SumoMe guide on Reddit traffic
      StartuoBros guide on Reddit traffic

      Good luck

Eeasy tip how to get high post carma really quick. If you dont have problem with NSFW, find some good NSFW images, upload it to imgur (do not share with community there or they will ban you) and post it to some NSFW subreddit with many subscribers. Works great for me.
