Instagram Influencers - a dying breed?

Hey guys!

I'm just reaching out to see what experiences people have had with instagram influencers?

I run an ecommerce store and haven't had much luck and have used a range of influencers with genuine followings of 5k-50k. Their posts didn't really change the impressions on our profile, nor did it affect link clicks or engagement for us.

I also had a hard time budgeting for spend on influencers - their prices seem to lack consistency, I've had an account with 12k followers asking for $700 for a post and another account asking for $800 with 10x the followers at 120k.

Regardless... there's word FB is beefing up the way they deliver ads via Instagram and have changed their alogrithm so that posts are delivered not in chronological order, but in relevance order - e.g. posts IG thinks you'll "like the most".

For me - that might mean I'd be better off spending $800 on a saavy social media marketer rather than a 1-post "wonder".

I could be wrong though! Would love to get some discussion going around this

I wouldn't say Instagram influencers are a dying breed, instead growing on a daily basis.

But what I have found is that many of them lack some serious marketing skills...

Which can make it very challenging to do business with sometimes.

    I agree.

This goes hand in hand with not really knowing what they are doing.

A lot of the promo prices are garbage to what you actually get...

You just gotta know who to go to and what they have.

I think you're spot on with all of this - I was wondering if they're going to be fizzling out because of the algorithm changes.

Yeah the price to value really isn't there with a lot of them and I guess researching and reaching out to find a good influencer at the right price is part of the hustle! Proving to be more rare than hens teeth at the moment though

I've never heard that one before, definitely using that in future references

Also for you or anyone else make sure you ask (or have them show a screenshot) of what countries their followers are from.

Not only are you usually paying a kings ransom for what they offer...

But even worse, the majority of their followers are not from tier 1 countries

I didn't think of that before - that's actually very relevant, usually I've assumed they're just from tier 1 countries! Thanks!

definitely not, my issue with them is that, they don't respond to DMs or at least most of them don't. It's very annoying. Also the fact that they don't leave posts up permanently is also a buzz kill

      Agree - total buzz kill.

I found that they charge different prices for "permanent posts".

I guess we've got to be really clear about what we expect when engaging them.

I have recently sent DM messages to 6 so called influencers with $$ offers for a 24hour post.

    None of them have replied.....

I would ask how much the $$ offers were, but with prices being all over the place I wouldn't be able to give any advice as to whether or not it's enough or too much haha

    Hey, George.

I can't say that social media influencers are slowly fleeting into oblivion because there are still awesome ones out there. I noticed that you "bait" them with cash instead of the value that the influencer and their audience would see in your product(s). Have you tried contacting influencers and asking them if they're willing to run a contest on your behalf and provide them with freebies they can keep + freebies they can give away?

It's much more direct marketing, as the audience are all fighting for the chance to win your product. It creates desire before they've even held it in their hands, and that's priceless.

That's a great idea! I'll try that approach and see what response I get.

I'm sometimes hesitant to give stuff away as I've had instances where the influencer takes the freebie and we never hear from them again. I think I need to figure out a safeguard.
