Are there benefits or detriments to reusing a hashtag?

Hi!

Are there benefits or detriments to re-using a hashtag? We held a contest about two months ago that used a specific hashtag. We are about to run another, similar contest. Not sure if we should use the same tag or change it?

Thanks!

As long as it's not spammy I don't think Twitter has anything in their algorithms that should be of concern to you

If the two contests fall under the same branding or are generally the same event then it's okay to reuse hashtags.

An example of this would be an event titled SomeEvent. You can use the hashtags #SomeEvent2017 or simply #SomeEvent. However, if the event is titled differently, then it may not be wise to use it.

Another example of rehashing hashtags would be the slogan. If they're hosted by the same organization and are both using the same slogan then it's okay to reuse the hashtag. An example of this would be #LetsMoveIt for contest number one and still using it in contest number 2.

You can also use your company/organization's hashtag to keep the branding too. As long as the context is right, then reusing hashtags is okay. Otherwise you may have people associate two separate events as being too similar, the same, or a continuation of. If that's not what you want then you may want to try a different hashtag

  • Avoid use of hash tags if the post is related to personal or family matter.
If you use has tags publicly, then unknown users can access your tag.
