Instagram: To have or not to have. That is the question.

Salud Warriors,

A quick question based on finding rather conflicting information when researching.
I have a client who's about to set up his first social media channels. He's a lawyer so obviously, the chief focus will be channeled onto LinkedIn and Twitter (plus Facebook). I was, however, wondering if it was not perhaps a good idea to set up an account on Instagram as well while keeping the activity at the minimum (1-2 posts per month). Now, the purpose of that is obviously not to build a following but rather to add another SEO element.

Not sure on the effectiveness of that approach though. Any practical insights though?

Not sure if I am making myself clear here.

Thanks up front.

I suppose it depends on the exact practice of law your client is engaged in. Things that could be conveyed visually might work but you'd have to really put on your creative thinking cap.

My initial gut reaction is that it would not be effective, though.

Only 1% of 5,726 active social media advertising participants utilize Instagram according to the 2018 Social Media Marketing Industry Report - Industry: Law Firm/Legal Services. Note: Not an affiliate link.

It makes sense because Instagram is primarily a mobile app. Primarily a visual platform that's based entirely on photo and video posts used to promote services and products.

There is Instagram for Business and works with Instagram Live a feature on Instagram Stories that allows users to stream video to followers and engage with them in real time and that vanish after 24 hours.

Instagram for lawyers is not effective for those reasons. Now if a law firm is involved in sponsoring a charity event, for example, it would be fine since the event is short lived, yet Facebook would reach more people.

For a law firm, I think you can use Instagram for branding.

    How?

The most important thing is for you to come up with relevant content that users may be interested in. Think about it, what are you going to be posting on your other social media platforms that you cant repurpose it to post on Instagram?

It would be really helpful if you can come up with ideas of what to post. My advice would be posting short clips of legal advice in your area of specialisation and directing them to the link in your bio for more info. Before you know it you will become the go-to page for certain legal advice.

Remember, in order for you to win a customer, you must first give something of quality to gain their trust.

Finally, if you think of posting once or twice a month then forget about it entirely because Instagram is all about engagement and regular posting else your account will be a dead sea.

    I hope this helps.

The video post vanishes after 24 hours. That is why engagement is short lived if at all. That is why less than 1% use Instagram.

On the whole, Instagram appeals strongly to people who crave eye-popping images. Most lawyer clients are not looking for eye-popping images, but law advice. I'd pass. Give your energy to creating helpful, free content through a self-hosted Wordpress blog, and work LinkedIn and Twitter.

Personally I wouldn't think it would do them any good. It's more of a visual platform and lawyers are really strict at how they promote themselves. So I don't think the content that suits Instagram would suit a lawyer.

As someone has previously mentioned, is that where their target audience is? If so, then give it a go. If not, then probably best focusing on FB, LinkedIn and Twitter.

It depends on what you want to do on Instagram

    1. 1. If you go to use Instagram story to discuss a hypothetical case, then yes.

    2. Instagram is mainly for pictures sharing, so the best case is an infographic.

    3. However, there is an exception. You can post your lifestyle as a lawyer, then people will share it as a lifestyle page, not a legal advise page. But traffic is traffic. So eventually, that traffic will pay off.

Check out Timothy Sykes Instagram. He teaches investing, but he has over millions of followers on IG is because he shares his lifestyle, not investing strategy.

    Hope that helps.

That would depend on the reason why you would want an Instagram.
Basically, is it a social media that is most used for persons with hobby in photography
and others just use it because they want to show some their photos to the world.
If you would like to use Instagram for promotion of your business, then you are taking the app into a higher level. It can be a great means of marketing your business provided you have the right target from
    the app users.

    Why to have it ?

    - If your audience is between 16 to 35 then you must focus on this.
    - If you need brand awareness go for it.
    - If you want to gain a huge pool of young audience get it.
    - If you regularly post social media post, then IG is the real business.
    - If your product is a Drink, Cosmetics, Clothing or Event Management.

    Why not to have it?

    - Advertising is costly.
    - Too many young people, some can not even buy your product.
    - Takes a lot of effort to get REAL people to see your post.

  • I recommend to stop looking for the next traffic source and to start following wealthy principles: "The more people you can help to get what you want, the more you can get what you want."

Become so valuable to point where they won't ignore you.

The point is the number of websites where you may think you need to be active will keep growing.
That means that if you want to be active on all the big social websites, you will not be able to do it, because their increase might become limitless to point where you can not keep up.

I wish you good luck and much success!

It's good to use Instagram if you have an eCommerce business where you can sell your products. Actually, Instagram not a long ago introduced the feature when you can tag your product on the photo which can redirect to your website. This is great.

But using Instagram for a lawyer, from my point, won't be very productive. In such cases, it's better to spend some time and money on LinkedIn because it suits more for such things.

Instagram is a great platform for marketing. You can add a human touch to your brand by giving your audience relatable content. It's also useful if you use every part of Instagram to your success. Remember that Instagram has a "Stories" section where people can share whatever is happening in their lives. This gives your audience the opportunity on how your brand work behind the scenes, and see your awesome process.

Instagram is also great for attracting Millennials or your people since this is the site's core demographic.

Depending on how you use it, Instagram can be very helpful. However, there are some things you need to consider depending on what you want to accomplish. Instagram is perfect for marketing and can also help in SEO but you will need to back it up with some quality content. Instead of 1-2 posts per month, make it at least 1 post per day.

    Am I right ?

so you can run facebooks ads for him that will help him to get more new clients.

and linkedin can also be very powerful.

but i think twitter will not help in this a lot.

as per me you should run facebooks ads and you can also run google ads because he is having an audience from a specific are so you can google ads so that whenver in that area will search for lawyer your client results will come up.

All social media is important and IG is one if the hottest platforms right now.

The fact some people think IG go lawyers wouldn't work, doesn't make sense. It's social media, so why can't it work? If there aren't many (successful) lawyers using IG, that doesn't mean it doesn't work, it means it's an untapped market.

Others on this thread have given examples how to make it work. I would be excited to be part of a niche that is not using IG! It's so rare!

I would be posting much more than 1-2 times per month as well!

I hope your client decides to pursue the IG account.

    Good luck!

    Why not use it?

Yes, probably not a lot of lawyers use Instagram for promoting their business. I say that's a good thing, nobody is expecting it, it might just work. Since he is already active on other social media, he probably already produces some sort of media content, and one or two posts a month is a ridiculously small amount of time investment. Posting it takes what, like 5 minutes? What does he have to lose?

If it works, great. If it doesn't, nothing is lost. I say try it out.

Instagram may be a good addition to your strategy depending on your client base. If most of your existing clients use Instagram, then you'll potentially get more clients by showing proofs and snapshots of your work life. You probably need to do persona research and get feedback from existing clients. With the rate of Instagram's growth, putting your business on Instagram should be a no-brainer. But it's subjective.

Instagram is a really good channel for marketing. However, it depends. If you are selling some products, that's good. And, if you want to promote for a company, it's also fine. The thing is INstagram focuses on images and short videos. So, if your products have attractive images, it's good to use Instagram. For instance, with top1apk, they can use Instagram to improve their branding consistency because they offer people apps and games. Then, it's easy to create appealing images and videos.
