Facebook sees usage drop since 2017

In a report by Fast Company, Facebook users have been spending less time on the platform than before.

According to Activate CEO Michael Wolf, two years ago Americans spent an average of 14 hours monthly on Facebook, but dropped 26% to just 9 hours monthly in 2019.

Facebook still has massive users at 2 billion worldwide, but the idea that people spend less time on the platform means something else to marketers who spend millions to advertising on Facebook.

The drop in usage hours has been attributed to users moving to other social platforms, mainly to Facebook-owned Instagram, Snapchat which is on a resurge, and new entrant TikTok.

Recently, Facebook has faced serious issues concerning user trust and how they handle data privacy. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also faced the US Congress about Libra and how they handled user privacy after allowing third-party Cambridge Analytics to access critical user data.

And yes, no matter how much Facebook launches game changers such as Libra, as long as they simply have no regard for user privacy, the platform will see a steady drop in usage hours as people shy away from Facebook and towards services which treats data like a precious gem, and which provides transparency about how data is being handled.

What do you think?

  • As an active media buyer on Facebook, I'd say that over the past year or so ads have gotten significantly more expensive and it's more difficult than ever before to get in front of buyers at affordable prices. Part of this is because the engagement on Facebook has decreased. Many people haven't deleted their Facebook accounts, but no longer actively use them, in favor of other social media, including Instagram.

I don't think in the long-run something like Facebook is what people will be interested in. I think Instagram does the whole "social media" job much better, because it makes the interactions smaller and more to the point. It's easier to share pictures, videos, etc. through something like Instagram - not to mention consuming the content produced by influencers and the like.

Personally, I don't think privacy will do Facebook in, but rather the ever-shifting trends in the social media landscape. I don't think that the other social media platforms are much better when it comes to privacy - just that there has been less media advertising around it. Facebook is likely to keep holding the most accounts of any platform, just because people are unlikely to delete theirs, even if they don't actively use it anymore.

Facebook was considered to be a good marketplace but now it has started making money for own use. Privacy is actually a concern and people don't wish to share their data. As per recent observation, Facebook users are now teens or those who don't possess purchasing power. Serious marketers have shifted to other sources like whatsapp, snapchat and other sources including Youtube. It seems now the fate of Facebook is also going to be like Orkut as Libra has worsened the situation.

I'm not surprised. Facebook has basically gotten worse and worse over time for everyone involved except maybe shareholders.

Also, some of the 2 billion are dead but still have facebook accounts.

Some are like me, I have an account, I've been on facebook 2 times in the last 3 years.

      Why?

I already know that my relative #1 had an omelette for breakfast; relative #2 thinks I should repent; friend #1 hates her job; #2 music tastes are the same now as they were in 1985, when they sucked. And I'm tired of the same religious messages and the same political messages (because there's a lot of surface but no depth).

I vote Calculatin Hellspawn of The Damned.

And I envy Zuckie, think the world's not fair: Why, oh why, did I not suck at dating as big time as he did? Why could I get me a date when I could have just as easily learned coding and dream about ways to compensate lack of game with newfangled inventions?

          No fair.

It all makes sense to me - millenials have the attention span of a fish and facebook requires more time than Instagram, TikTok or Snapchat, for example, as there material is usually visual, while on FB, I believe it's around 50/50.

Im just wondering, whether FB will make a move on TikTok and try buying it as they did with Instagram a couple years back.

That was eventually going to happen as Facebook has become very unfriendly to its user.

Facebook was awesome when it came out originally. I was able to connect with friends I havent seen in years, the games were fun and then it became addictive. I was meeting so many people and playing games all time which was taking up too much of my time.

I like Facebook as an advertising platform. It allows me to connect with potential customers both long term and short. I do not use Facebook recreationally anymore because it just became old for me. I imagine it is still great for businesses because so many people use it to place ads, and expand there businesses. With group platforms and business pages, Facebook is a great place for businesses to expand their customer base.

Facebook I imagine is getting old for people and the new generation is just not liking Facebook as much as the generations did when it first came out. Facebook used to be all about friends and connecting now it became all about money.
