Everyone is joining the dark mode bandwagon

Name it. Windows 10. iOS. Android. Instagram. Twitter. Many apps and platforms are all over dark mode, a system-wide setting which is implemented by applying white text over a dark (often black) background.

Is it merely a fad which will soon lose traction? Are we seeing more platforms with Dark Mode as default? Do you find Dark Mode beneficial?

"Dark Mode" has for ever, been a developers no no. There is that psychological connection between print and digital, creating the need for "White Space". The issue with white space going back to the late 90's and with CTR monitors was the push for true white screens. True white screen are down right rough on the old eyes - creating the need for rules like the 30/30 rule. For every 30 minutes looking at a monitor you were to look away for 30 seconds.

later 2010ish the ideas of back lighting your monitor work space became the thing to do. But today with the ever present use of "Mobile" ( Phone and Tablet ) and the increased size, backlighting isn't really an option. From an "Eyes" perspective the only option is then "Dark Mode"

is it a fad? I don't think so, I think the concept is here to stay. However, as a marketer you have to be smart with its uses. "Selective" dark mode at this point would be optimal. Other than that. you need to consider the platform you would be coding permanent "Dark Mode". One has to consider the amount of desktop vs mobile users on a site. The more prevalent the base of your users falls to desktop you would want to stay with whitespace, the further it falls to mobile, you could use Dark Mode.

The other variable to consider is the target age of your audience. Younger targets you could get away with a dark mode inspired setup on your site.. but the older your target gets the more the psychological connection between print and digital holds true.

At this point it is a bit of a balancing act. I don't think there is loss IE sales or viewers for not having dark mode at this point... but I think as experience and data indicate you MAY lose users with dark mode - being a permanent setting.

    Hello
Navigate to "General," then "Accessibility," and select "Display Accommodations." Tap "Invert Colors," and choose between the "Smart Invert" and "Classic Invert" options. Select one, and the colors on your screen will invert. And,Facebook dark mode came first to the Messenger app in April after it was first noted as a hidden feature the previous month. In that app, it's a toggle in your profile

A "Night mode" option is a good idea. I use it on Zoho mail.

I'd definitely make it a switchable option and not the only one.

IMO, dark mode is better than the white background and light black text seen on so many websites and the default setting on new themes. I can't read the text!

Dark mode to me conveys a sense of "something hidden" and when a website is trying to convey a sense of trust and transparency the dark mode will lose every time.
