In the not-too-distant past restaurants were simply, well, restaurants. You go into a diner, you have a table, a chair, and a plate. Now a stat from Forbes says that about 17% of startup restaurants fail in the first year, a pretty low failure rate but that 17% still matters if your area isn't "Instagrammable" enough. And new restaurants are more likely to succeed if they are promoted on Instagram, if people snap photos of their food, all those things.
