Dealing with a PR storm

Facebook is in a PR crisis with the way they're handling hateful posts and content on the platform. In response, advertisers are boycotting the platform to perhaps push Facebook to take action.

No brand is immune to a PR nightmare. There's Apple with their throttling of old iPhones, Microsoft and their Windows XP dilemma, among others. Here's how you handle them, according to Forbes.

1. Take responsibility.
2. Be proactive, transparent, and accountable.
3. Get ahead of the story.
4. Prepare for a social media backlash.
5. Be human.
6. Apologise first. Take action second.
7. Monitor, plan, and communicate.
8. Communicate relevant details to key stakeholders.
9. Listen to your team.
10. Develop a strong organisational brand culture

This is not even close to a "PR crisis". What Zuckerberg is doing is facing down professional agitators and their bullying tactics in rounding up support from "socially conscious" companies to rally around this emotionally charged "#Stop Hate for Profit" incitement. The boycott movement is highly organized with an agenda spearheaded by a coalition of self-serving civil rights groups and activists.

Forbes is definitely right in how to handle these intense situations. These tips are applicable for all forms of relevant situations.

Zuckerberg is watching as all of these Forbes "tips" and the "boycott" movement are giving Facebook a whole lot of free publicity.

hate speech per se is protected under "free speech" in order to shut down hate speech, then you have to give up rights to free speech. If Facebook were to announce today the end of hate speech, then they would be saying this is the end to free speech unless the free speech law has changed, then this would open Facebook up to a long list of free speech lawsuits.

Be careful what you ask for because the pasture may not be greener on the other side, once you take away the right of free speech, then it will not be greener, and most social media platforms have this problem, not just facebook.

"Free speech", especially "hate speech", has never been a protected right on Facebook, and the current issue has absolutely nothing to do with it.

For example, Facebook has banned hundreds of white supremacist groups in recent years. And there is AI technology in place to detect and remove objectionable posts, but recent volume has increased.

Organizers of this "boycott" agenda, however, are making demands approaching control through blackmail, of which Zuckerberg is pushing back.
