Your brain on social media

According to my phone's screen time activity (thanks iPhone), I spend a daily average of 3 hours and 44 minutes on my phone with 2 hours and 30 minutes on social media. Further delving shows that I spent the most time on Facebook Messenger, followed by Instagram, Facebook, and then Twitter. Right, so that means I don't spend much time on social media even on weekends. But what about the others?

Social media is one of the most powerful tools in our society, yet is also the biggest distraction. Watch this TED Talk by Connor LaRocque, president of LA Roqk Enterprises, as he talks about how phones can either help us positively impact millions of people or act as a detriment to our social development.

Unfortunately what I have seen mostly is that social media or the phone in general is used for things that act as a detriment to our social development. If we want then there are millions of options that can make it such a great way to progress socially and financially as well. But currently it is just acting as a distraction and nothing more.

Yes, I agree. I spent a lot of time on social media even when there is nothing to do on it. Just scrolling down and viewing photos of friends until I reach boredom. But, that too I jumped to other social media after checking one. Need to get rid of this habit.

That's so true. I've found that for me personally, whenever I'm taking breaks in between work, I almost always just reach for my phone and scroll through the apps and social media and then my 5 minute break ends up being 30 mins or even an hour. So I've mostly just gotten rid of my phone by putting it in another room so I can completely eliminate that distraction while working. Definitely helped boost my productivity for sure.

I mostly spend 5 hours of my day on social media even though there is nothing much to see interesting. I think its kinda becoming our part of our lifestyle, hard to get out of them.

  • If you are going to spend that much time on social media why not get paid for it? That is what I am doing with webtalk which shares 50% of their profits with its members and donates 10% to charity, so no need to feel guilty about the time you are spending on social media!! Whoopeee!!

  • You are right! Most of us spend time on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. I believe spending time on social media isn't bad if you are doing it for a purpose. Most of us just waste time but if we use that time doing something positive on these platforms, things would be different, both emotionally and financially.

we are living in a society with a new drug nobody thinks of as a drug, and we are all addicts...

    ...
yes our phone and social media is nothing else than a drug...and we really should learn to deal with it.

I'm not quite sure how, but we need to fight against it, the zuckerbergs of this world want to distract us from reality, it's time to get our lifes back...
