This infographic from Statista illustrates the monthly active users of selected social networks as well as messaging services. The data was collected in April 2020.

And it's obvious who dominates - a certain social media empire with that eponymous letter F. Mind you, Facebook owns Facebook itself, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram so collectively they have almost 6.8 billion monthly active users. Such massive footprint.

  • FB's obviously the lifeblood of countless small businesses, too ... one flag from my vantage point is that engagement in the flagship app (hours spent per user on core FB) appears to be declining (obviously Snapchat and Instagram / stories played a role here ... nice that they own IG!) ... they've seemed to lean further in to groups and Messenger to combat / reverse this, but imo they'd do well to learn from TikTok and provide users with high quality/easier to use/highly accessible video creation tools to help drive engagement.
  • Down here for business, we put FB out and put WA for 1st, YT 2nd, TikTok 3rd and last IG.
  • Related: just came across this chart of TikTok's U.S. monthly user growth (disclosed by TikTok). Was expecting to see big numbers, but these are still pretty crazy to me ...
