YouTube ads Campaign - watchtime is just 12%

Hello folks...

I hope everybody is doing very well...

Last week I started my first completely WH YouTube channel...
It is related to ASMR, and all videos are created by me.
Since the channel is brand new (with zero subs), to promote it and capture some subs and
rank, I decide to go for Google ads.

I uploaded 3 videos and tried to capture traffic for them by creating different google campaigns (I mainly used discovery ads, and chose placements, (and also audience options) on very similar channels)...
I got almost 3500 views and 30 subs in a week or so...
The main problem is that the watch time was horrible (Just 12% or so)...
The videos were 5 to 7 minutes long and the quality of them was greater than the main competitor in the micro niche...
I tried to have the main competitor's channel in the placements ads as well... But the result was not any better...

1. Is that a normal expectation out of YouTube ads?

2. Such watch time can kill the ranking of the channel at the end, right?

3. So how to promote a brand new channel in ASMR niche then?

Unfortunately, the result I got made my disappointed of WH methods of ranking channels in YouTube.

Any help would be appreciated.

What's the average length of the most popular videos in the ASMR niche?

I'd be hesitant to draw conclusions based on this sample set, or to rely solely on advertising for subscriber acquisition at this juncture. Might advise creating more content, and letting that library volume serve as your discovery mechanism. Requires some patience, but perhaps leads to higher and more dedicated engagement ultimately.

      Thanks Matthew...

Well while the channel is brand new, then I am afraid the channel wont grow naturally (Or at least it takes ages for that to happen) just but adding more and more videos.
I think I need some subscribers to interact with the videos and grow the channel, that's why I went for Google ads. But now I am afraid if I continue this method of gathering subs (Google ads I mean) then due to the horrible watch time I am getting out of ads it brings negative impacts to the channel (In terms of ranking and growth) rather than bringing any help...

I hear you. And yeah, your Google ads point about the customer quality they're attracting right now for you is why I'm wondering if you should lean back on "the best content marketing is more content" while you get off the ground. But obviously that can be onerous in terms of time/waiting ... do you have a social presence? I know a few folks in the kids animation YT space who developed a presence in different FB groups (and wound up setting up their own) as well as on soundcloud and were able to develop solid channels with high engagement through promoting therein...

Also - you've likely already seen this being in the niche, but in case not, came across this Google research write-up that has some potentially helpful tidbits (peak search time for ASMR videos, other content ASMR searchers are also watching that might make for fruitful co-promotional or partnership opportunities, etc). What viewers want can get in first couple of minutes then they will not watch video fully even though you have a best quality content.
