Social Media Today reports that Facebook is conducting new research about how the Facebook platform, along with Instagram affect political attitudes during the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election in the US.

"Building on the initiative we launched in 2018, [the project] will examine the impact of how people interact with our products, including content shared in News Feed and across Instagram, and the role of features like content ranking systems."


The 2018 project ran into significant difficulties in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but Facebook hopes a fresh start will gain valuable insights:

"We are asking for the explicit, informed consent from those who opt to be part of research that analyzes individual-level data. This means research participants will confirm both the use of their data and that they understand how and why their data will be used. Additionally, as part of our studies, we will also analyze aggregated user data on Facebook and Instagram to help us understand patterns. In addition to this, the studies - and our consent language - were reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure they adhere to high ethical standards."
Marketers stand to gain insights on how Facebook affects consumer behaviour - results expected in 2021

It should be possible to harvest valuable data about sharing trends and other activities during the election campaign from users who give Facebook permission to look. That should lead to a better understanding of how Facebook itself affects trends and give the platform better tools for dealing with problems in the future. If that works, then the benefits could be huge. Facebook has promised to be open in terms of results, so everyone out there stands a great chance of gaining an improved understanding of how Facebook influences users on a variety of issues - and that can't be bad for marketers. Expect to see some results from the study by mid-2021.

    How will social media influence voters as we approach the 2020 election?

    Social media is having a profound impact on voters as we approach the 2020 election.

    Yahoo Disabled Comments in order to better control the narrative. As a marketer I used to get trends and idea sparks to use in my marketing.

    Twitter has had to create misinformation Warnings. Which is good for less clickbait.

    I have experienced 2 Marketing Forums that have individuals that abuse their positions because of personal bias. Not even subtle. It makes you want to stop contributing but that is exactly what they want.


    But as far as Facebook....

    Well I just started hanging out on Facebook and learning the Galaxy and orbits and black holes.

    Mark Stole Facebook that is always in the back of my head...the guy simply can not be trusted. Cash over everything including ethics...unless you are a member of Facebook then you must be squeaky clean while they conduct secret manipulations on you as they they have confessed to.

    But will I come to the party. YES. And I might even dance..but my guards will be up the entire time!

    I have seen Optimized Profiles combined with helpful engagement make huge cash and free lead generation.

    Facebook is a media. So just like the press, TV , and Radio, the social media will have a greater impact on the campaigns. Unless theauthorities gag them, I see a situation where the next US president will be elected by the social media.

    Social media influencers have a lot of followers and people actually value their opinions and what those influencers follow. So, I think they can definitely influence a lot of people about the 2020 elections through their posts, videos, and other things.

    I assume the edited title is referring to the US election. Interesting - as of the seven posts in the thread - only two are from members in the USA.

    Facebook has promised to be open in terms of results
    While I'm hopeful this study proves helpful to marketers - if the last study they published is any indication (http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/...litical-bubble) - separating the signal from the noise could prove difficult.

    On the one hand, Facebook's advertising business is predicated upon giving / showing people want they want (which it's very good at doing!), but on the other, there's huge pressure for them to always *claim* they don't increase polarization/filter bubbles ... which could color the analysis/results in a way that diminishes or makes opaque the tactical/practical takeaways for us in the IM community.

    Really could care less about facebook and instagram . I would prefer to see a thread that shows Marketers how to start a campaign from Scratch of a unknown candidate. To how they win would a office position as a Mayor, School board President, Congressman or sheriff. Or take two equal candidate and see what techniques make one more appealing than the other without personal attacks.

    What style Marketing methods would gain the person the most votes ? Examples going door to door, mass mailings, Bandit signs, phone calls, etc.
