A new article on Search Engine Journal reports that LinkedIn has 706 million users spanning 200 countries and regions. and many of them use LinkedIn groups to generate website traffic and build their contacts.

The three benefits of starting a LinkedIn Group
  • LinkedIn Groups can expand your network.
  • LinkedIn Groups let you connect more deeply with your target audience.
  • LinkedIn Groups help increase website traffic.

The five key steps in building an active LinkedIn Group

You won't be the first, because there are two million active LinkedIn groups right now. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get lost in the crowd, if you do the following things:
  • Be clear about the group's focus
    Try to find a niche, because there is far less competition the more specific you get. Ask what makes your group different, consider the benefits you'll offer to members, and ask how you can stand out from the crowd.
  • Don't add just anyone to your group
    Resist the urge to add every single person on your contact list to your new group. Feeds need to have relevance for every member so that they'll engage.
  • Make your group increase value for members
    Now you're on your way to a successful group. Once you've chosen your members, you need to make sure they engage and stick around.
  • Instigate interesting discussions.
  • Encourage users to express their opinions.
  • Use current industry dilemmas and controversies to get the conversation going.
  • Stick to hot topics.
  • Take good care of the group
    If users feel neglected and that content and discussions aren't relevant to them, they'll soon leave the group. Spend time creating meaningful content and relevant conversations, and remove anything spammy or lacking in substance. Maintenance is important.
  • Promote your group
    You'll need to make an active effort to make the group successful and keep it relevant. That means getting out there and promoting it to potential members. You can use other social media platforms and add a link to your blog and emails.

There's more on this in the original article, so if you'd like to harness LinkedIn groups to boost web traffic or increase your contactd lists, take a look.

    Before creating any group one has also to think about how to monetize that group in the long run...

    On the top of the bullet points outlined above, one must start with the monetization architecture.....I have seen people who have large groups...but failed to monetize or convert such traffic....

    Before jumping up and start a LinkedIn Group tomorrow or now, I strongly advise that one figures out:

    (1) the monetization of that group in the long run;
    (2) content feed: if one is already on 5 social media networks, repurposing content from those networks for LinkedIn use might work;
    (3) one must have at least 400-700 connections for that group creation NOT to be a BIG hassle

    The thing about Linkedin groups is that most of them are inactive with barely any activity daily. Linkedin is for professionals and they do not have any time to spare posting in Linkedin groups.

      I absolutely disagree. Industry leaders spend lots of their time creating their image and showing expertise. Linkedin is a great tool for digital marketing.
