Twitter Continues to Relaunch its Verified Accounts

A new article on Search Engine Journal reports on Twitter's decision to reverse a decision made in 2017 that got rid of verified accounts, and highlights what users need to do to qualify for the honor under a new system.

When Twitter announced it would be reintrocducing its Verified Accounts program next year, it was a surprise to many. After all, the original scheme was ended because Twitter seemed concerned users saw the blue badge as an endorsement by the platform - so whats changed under the new system, and what does that mean for users? Here's what Twitter said when it cancelled the original program:

"UPDATE on our verification program and the actions we're taking. Verification has long been perceived as an endorsement. We gave verified accounts visual prominence on the service which deepened this perception. We should have addressed this earlier but did not prioritize the work as we should have. This perception became worse when we opened up verification for public submissions and verified people who we in no way endorse."

Twitter Verification Program Changes for 2021

Twitter has made significant changes to the verification process, including:
  • Loosening the policy around complete profiles.
  • Updating references to Wikipedia definition of notability.
  • Updating the News category to also recognize journalists.
  • Updating the Sports category to recognize eSports
  • Adding digital content creators to the Entertainment category

Twitter says there are ongoing efforts with regard to new categories for academics, scientists and religious leaders. Until then, the platform suggests users find an alternative category. The new policy kicks in on January 20, 2021. You'll receive a warning if you're at risk from the changes - and if you update your account by the start date, you won't lose your badge:

"Our new policy defines a complete account as one that has all of the following:
  • either a verified email address or phone number
  • a profile image
  • a display name"
