A new article on Social Media Today YouTube is testing a new shortcut option for its 'Shorts' feed. The move is seen as a further attempt to establish itself within the lucrative Indian market.

The above screenshot shows the new home screen link, which allows Shorts prominent space in the top bar of the app. That makes it far easier for users to tap through and see what's new on their dedicated Shorts feed. YouTube says:

"We'll be adding a Shorts icon to the top or bottom row of the mobile app that makes it easier for you to tap and watch Shorts on YouTube. Those who are in the experiment will either see a Shorts icon in place of the Explore tab (with the Explore icon moved to the top row) or will see a Shorts icon in place of the Cast icon in the top row (casting can still be done in the player while watching a video)."
The company also revealed it would start testing this tweak with "a small group of users in India using the YouTube app on Android and iOS." TikTok got banned in India back in June. but the platform boasted 200 million users at the time, so there's a massive market gap that YouTube seeks to exploit. Interestingly, local app Reposo has seen user numbers swell in the wake of the TikTok ban. However, Google just invested $145 million in Reposo's parent company InMobi - and it remains to be seen whether that will result in problems for the video app. Will we see Reposo get swallowed up by YouTube Shorts? It's going to depend on how much influence over decision making Google's $145 million bought it!
