Facebook Abandons Facial Recognition, Will No Longer Identify Users to Tag in Uploaded Images

A new article on Social Media Today reports that in a highly significant move, Facebook announced that it's shutting down its facial recognition program, and that it will also delete all of its facial recognition files, meaning that it'll no longer be able to identify people in posted images.

"In the coming weeks, we will shut down the Face Recognition system on Facebook as part of a company-wide move to limit the use of facial recognition in our products. As part of this change, people who have opted in to our Face Recognition setting will no longer be automatically recognized in photos and videos, and we will delete the facial recognition template used to identify them."
That's a big change on a key element that the company has stood by for years, which has been sparked partly by ongoing fines and legal challenges, while also being driven by its limited value, in relative terms, when compared to the rising costs. Facebook's facial recognition systems have long been a cause for concern among privacy advocates, while the process itself has also cost Facebook billions in fines due to legal action over its use and process.

Facebook was fined $5 billion by the FTC in 2019 over various privacy breaches, including the use of facial recognition technology:

"The FTC also alleges that Facebook misrepresented users' ability to control the use of facial recognition technology with their accounts. According to the complaint, Facebook's data policy, updated in April 2018, was deceptive to tens of millions of users who have Facebook's facial recognition setting called "Tag Suggestions" because that setting was turned on by default, and the updated data policy suggested that users would need to opt-in to having facial recognition enabled for their accounts."
The New York Times also reports that Facebook's parent company Meta has considered building facial recognition into its AR glasses project, with specific note of the privacy concerns and trade-offs involved. Those could end up being prohibitive, but it does show that Facebook is still weighing the value of face ID, and how it can be used to maximize its projects, even though it's abandoning its original recognition systems.

They should've really abandoned that facial recognition years ago.

Everything or any information available on the internet is prone to threat in the cyber world. Applications nowadays use microphones to target ads, try it. Scroll through Instagram or Facebook and if you have given permission to the application they would be using the same for targeting you with the ads that mean it uses a microphone even when you do not use the feature in the application. This is just an example.

  • This feature always bothered me. I hate it when I get notifications that I'm tagged in photos of people I don't know.

Well l guess that gives us a wee bit of privacy back (or at least the illusion of it) but in the bigger scheme of things, l don't think it makes a single sliver of a difference, what with all the digital data that is readily available and the advanced AI technology to process it. I don't think there's any way to run away from our data being recorded and processed, so we might as well all just embrace it. There's always 2 sides to almost everything, and just like money, your digital data being recorded and processed, while being monetized through ads, can also lead to life-saving apps for heart patients etc.

I'm not sure if they will give up this option. I think that they will rather just pay a fine and promise.

With their feet in the metaverse now, I'm sure Facebook (Meta) will find an even scarier option to track and store users' private data.

Interesting and hilarious. They have the files and they delete nothing and they do share them with law enforcement and will continue to do so.

Facebook and Instagram have scientist level employees just to make sure no apps are helping you delete anything at anytime (friends/followers). They want it to be as complex as possible to do so.

They might scrap it publically, but keep it in use privately for law enforcement.

In my region - Facebook scams are all over the place right now. Two cousins had their FB accts hacked (pleas for money sent out from that acct to all the friends)....

A local town has a 'talk' FB page for local events and etc - and a new member applied to join, was accepted and immediately offered to 'give money to 10 people to thank you for allow me in your group'....which was of course a scam. A few naive people replied to her and she immediately asked for bank acct/credit card numbers to 'put money in your acct'. Thankfully no one was dumb enough to fall for it.

The cousin said he 'stupidly' just approved anyone who asked to be a friend whether he knew them or not.... and the 'town site' admin was quick to see the problem and shut down the scammer within 15 minutes or so.

Hard to believe people fall for that stuff but they must or it wouldn't keep happening.

Maybe abandoning this feature would help Facebook regain its title in the Social media world !! It's seem like people are using the platform less and less these days I mean how can you blame them with such powerhouses like tik Tok in the picture.
