Can you capture email addresses in your own Facebook Group?

There seems to be a lot of conversation about this topic. Some people are apparently scraping emails from their initial join questionnaire. But that one-by-one collection process would be extremely inefficient.

Anyway, I don't have a Facebook group (yet), and I'm wondering...

Can you simply make a first post (in your own group), pin it to the top of the column, then (in that post) link to a squeeze page (and freebie) on your own website?

Or, is that sort of thing prohibited by Facebook? (I know they try to keep people ON Facebook.)

      The weird thing is, Facebook doesn't seem to always be consistent about this point. But I think your post is probably the best and safest answer.

    No you can't until someone's profile is public. There are many tools available on internet which you can use to extract the email id of anyone else. Facebook has over 1.4 billion users worldwide and more than 300 million people using Facebook Groups every month. It's a great place to build relationships and quickly connect with a community of like-minded individuals. And with so many businesses on Facebook, it's never been easier to reach potential customers through groups.

    wouldnt this be considered Facebook scraping? I know email scraping is heavily frowned upon if not outright illegal! Just remember, one mantra I subscribe to is ....live by the email sword, die by the email sword!

      Pat,

      You may have misunderstood my comment.

      When I mentioned "capturing email addresses" I was referring to building an email list from people who voluntarily either opt-in to that list OR provide their email on your own Facebook group's "entry questionnaire."

      Neither of those methods is at all sketchy or considered "scraping." However, Facebook doesn't like people leaving their site, so I don't know if they will allow capturing emails in any way, shape, or form.

    I think a good strategy would be to mention the benefits in your Profile cover...not really promoting but just a subtle mention.

    Then you can leave a link underneath but just say "Link In Bio"

    In your current job title then link to your sign up page like a business.

    Hopefully you have a catchy keyword rich domain name.

    Worth a test.
