Is Snapchat still around? Anyone still on it? Wanna try their new subscription service?

A new article on Social Media Today reports that Snapchat is exploring a new potential monetization pathway, via a new subscription service called 'Snapchat+' which would give users access to new a range of exclusive and experimental app features and tools.

As you can see, Snapchat+ would come with variable payment tiers, with a free, one-week trial option as well, enabling you to test out what's on offer via the service. At present, in this early iteration, that offering includes:
  • Access to exclusive Snapchat icons
  • A new profile badge to show that you're a Snapchat+ user
  • New data insights, including the capacity to see your friends' location history (over the last 24 hours) and info on who's rewatched your Story
  • The capacity to pin a user in the app as 'your #1 best friend'

None of those are exactly mind-blowing additions - but again, this is early days, and it could change a lot between now and an official release, if it actually gets to that stage. The author asked Snapchat about Snapchat+ and it provided this statement:

"We're doing early internal testing of Snapchat+, a new subscription service for Snapchatters. We're excited about the potential to share exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features with our subscribers, and learn more about how we can best serve our community."
Essentially, it's like Twitter Blue, but for Snapchat instead - but if current Twitter Blue take-up is anything to go by, it's not likely to be a massive hit, at least among the majority of users. In its most recent performance update, Twitter reported that its revenue from subscriptions and other non-advertising sources totaled $94 million in Q4 21, which is actually a decrease of 31% year-over-year.

That suggests Twitter Blue isn't gaining any traction as yet, while Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal has also said that Twitter has not hit 'intermediate milestones that enable confidence' with its new revenue and growth projects. Would Snapchat+ fare any better?

Maybe part of the reason that Snap might feel more confident is that Snapchat is a more personally-aligned app, with users having a strong affiliation with the platform for their private messaging and interaction purposes. Take, for example, the popularity of Snap streaks, which see users working to keep their daily interactions alive, sometimes at all costs, which shows that Snap users have an arguably more compelling connection with Snapchat as their app of choice.

Perhaps that will see more users willing to sign up, while the extra data could also be a lure for those looking to maintain more insight on their connections. That could actually be a strong selling point, more so than what Twitter Blue has on offer - though again, it's early days, likely too early to say what the actual offering will be in the end.

But still, Snap has to try new things.

Last month, the platform issued a guidance note to the SEC which advised that its overall revenue would miss the targets that it communicated in its Q1 earnings update, which it reported just a month earlier:

"Since we issued guidance on April 21, 2022, the macroeconomic environment has deteriorated further and faster than anticipated. As a result, we believe it is likely that we will report revenue and adjusted EBITDA below the low end of our Q2 2022 guidance range."
What do people think? Too little, too late from Snapchat? Or a new lease of life for the platform? Who's still using it, and why?

  • Seems like something even more useless than Quora's new Quora+ subscription.

Can't see why anyone would buy this outside of teenagers looking to brag, or insecure boyfriends / girlfriends with stalker tendencies.

The fact that Snapchat even stores 24 hours of location history is alarming.

I've wondered if the new trend of "+" subscriptions is nothing more than an effort to cash in on the popularity of streaming "+" services like Paramount Plus, Disney Plus, Discovery Plus, etc.

Will be interesting to see how many users think their own commentary is worth 'upgrading'...or want to stalk their BFF?

Found this simplified list of 'upgrades' and sounds to me much like the little colored 'stars' we got in elementary school. I guess I just don't 'get it'.

    • Pin a friend as a #1 BFF.
    • Get access to exclusive Snapchat icons.
    • Display a badge in your profile.
    • See your orbit with BFF.
    • See your Friend's whereabouts in the last 24 hours.
    • See how many friends have rewatched your story.

They've been losing users ever since Instagram rolled out Stories.

Used this program a long time ago, I liked its simplicity and design, I heard about it from a friend.
Briefly speaking in it you can try on various emoji, edit photos, also to share photos, and these photos can see your friends which you will add beforehand. The quality of the photo remains the same, there is an opportunity to adjust the various visual effects, stickers, captions, and more. Annex worthy of attention and is well suited to those who love to be photographed a lot.

I don't use Snapchat for business purposes. I probably never will because my target audience just isn't there. In fact, unless you're a business that targets teens almost exclusively I'd say there are much more appropriate social platforms out there.

I downloaded Snapchat when it first came out ages ago and deleted my account the very next day. Didn't understand the hype back then and still don't get all the hype today. Maybe it's just that I am not a huge fan of social media in general.

I didn't know Twitter Blue has been such a failure, but I'm not surprise either, as a regular user and advertiser in this platform I am surprise that Twitter still keep relevance...They have some well-know problems that they just don't correct, I don't know why!

Regarding Snapchat...It has never worked for me, I tried in the past because you never know where you can find a gold mine, but it didn't resonate with me, I didn't understand it and I don't like it...However it looks like some people in this thread have make it work for them, so it's probably a personal thing; at the end of the day it looks that there are almost as many ways to "make it" than marketers

They'll be relevant for quite some time.

      What problems exactly?

Bots for example, most independent reports say that exists between 20 and 65 M bots in Twitter and I have notice several times of a copy paste fake tweet dozens or even hundreds of times spreading hoaxes, political messages and other narratives with an agenda.

What else? Oh yeah, they have banned thousands of accounts for not being supportive of the "current thing", they backed off and restored those accounts when the "current thing" changed...So censorship is the order of the day at Twitter. (Most of these accounts were far from violating any of the Twitter rules)

They limit your account if you're extremely active because they think you're using external software, example, if you're having a Twitter space and you want to follow all the attendants you may get limited for 1 day, 1 week or more. Same if you like or RT a lot

Twitter spaces, more often than not, you can't see the spaces in your mobile, that's annoying because you only can participate on them with your mobile not PC. Plus, they got rugged often which is a real problem if you are organizing a big space because you can lose half or even more of your audience.

I can go on and on, but those are a nice sample and are far from new, so I guess Twitter have not much intention to solve them
