In its first Creator Insider update of the year, YouTube introduced a slew of new metrics and display options, including subscriber growth data, Shorts thumbnails, new subscriber recognition options, and more.

To begin, YouTube is introducing a new component to YouTube Studio that will offer a breakdown of subscribers obtained by each content genre, providing greater perspective on video performance.

Creators already have access to this more detailed growth breakdown via YouTube Analytics, but now YouTube is bringing this data up front, making it easy to see how each video, and video format, is contributing to your YouTube channel growth.

Which is certainly in line with Shorts and the growing popularity of short video segments on the app. As YouTube seeks to grow the use of short-form material, it also seeks to better highlight to creators how popular the format is, and these findings may assist to provide additional context in this regard.

On a similar note, YouTube is updating the YouTube Studio mobile app with a new display of what material your audience is seeing across format types.

YouTube explains:

"To see this card, go to studio analytics, audience tab, and filter videos your audience watches by content type. The goal is to give creators a better understanding of what types of content their audience is watching to help with inspiration and keep an eye on what is happening in their space. This may be especially insightful for formats a creator has not tried yet or does not publish often. For example, shorts, live, et cetera, et cetera."
So, once again, Shorts is the focal point.

Because of the enormous development of short-form content, YouTube now wants to recruit more creators uploading Shorts to meet that demand.

In terms of Shorts, YouTube is also introducing a new feature that will allow Shorts creators to choose a frame from their Short to be used as a thumbnail during the first upload process.

This gives Shorts creators another chance to tailor their video and increase response, while YouTube also mentions that it is working on new ways to further modify Shorts thumbnails in the future.

At the moment, you can only choose a frame for your Shorts thumbnail on Android.

Chime in.
