Snapchat gets flak for rolling out 'My AI'

Oof. Snapchat learned the hard way that people hate platforms messing with their private chats.

As you might know, Snapchat announced its 'My AI' GPT-powered chatbot during their annual Partner Summit. The chatbot would be rolled out to all users after being initially a Snapchat+ subscriber-only feature.

Evidently, people hate it. According to TechCrunch:

"Over the past week, Snapchat's average US App Store review was 1.67, with 75% of reviews being one-star, according to data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower. For comparison, across Q1 2023, the Snapchat average U.S. App Store review was 3.05, with only 35% of reviews being one-star."
The main issue here is that My AI has been embedded into users' personal inbox, the space where majority of Snap users interact. And users feel that's just intrusive, and there's no way to actually remove the My AI chat on top of your inbox display.

The thing here is, people want to use messaging apps for messaging, not anything else. So Snapchat might have deserved the flak they're getting for this. Ads in message streams are intrusive, and that defeats the purpose of private messaging.

Chime in.

One of those stories where you wonder 'what were they thinking'. My opinion is that too often a 'management type' makes a decision based on 'look what I/we can do" without giving it much thought.

They definitely thought "we could" instead of ask if "we should". What a terrible idea, seems to be a lot of those going around with big companies lately.

  • It's this statement that really annoyed me

"Instead, a Snapchat spokesperson said if users didn't like the AI feature, they don't have to use it."

Do they want to lose their paying customers?
