Is Social Media Replacing Email?

Obviously people still use email but I have found that I am relying more and more on social media to promote my businesses than on email. Have you been finding that email is getting less effective when compared to social media?

I don't think it's replacing email, it's just another way to communicate with your customers.
It fits some businesses better than others. For example, if you run a restaurant in particular, or any type of food establishment, it's an EXTREMELY good way to communicate with your customers.

Social media isn't replacing email. Emails are still there but most of this day, social media is the best way to promote your business. You can easily communicate to people.

Agreed. It's very effective at things such as announcing a special deal, a coupon, etc... because it gets everyone talking on your wall, and then that in return creates more interest from your customers friends, etc.... very powerful.

I happen to know that a lot of young kids
use facebook exclusively for contacting friends
    and rarely use email.
Obviously I cannot speak for the whole world. lol

These kids will turn into adults
and who knows what the future will be.

I'm not sure about just young people. Friends that I have known for years now seem to send messages via FB instead of an email. Perhaps it's just easier to remember you need to contact the person when you are on.

Social media is great for just that - a way to communicate freely with a large forum of people, so it makes it ideal for promoting and networking in business. But email will stay because it is used for a lot more personal and official communication. Besides, when you sign up for most social media sites, they ask for your email...

I have been hearing the same thing about young people. Mobile and social media seem to be the future. I find myself limiting my use to the main social media. There are too many to keep track off. I think there will be a falling out with social media and only a few big players who people will use seriously.

I think that social media works so well because people don't necessarily see it as a direct ad, that they are being directed to a sales page to purchase something.

E-mail is still effective, but you will have to be interactive with them. On social media they will keep interactive automatically.

Social media is more appealing than email. It's more about personal interactions.

My network is primarily on social media (FB and Twitter) and it has been the most effective for me. But every experienced marketer keeps on about THE LIST. So I recently decided to build my list. I'll just wait and see how effective that is.

email is not dead by far, but social sites are becoming a bigger deal...and maybe replacing email to a large degree. i cant find it, but i recently read an article thats talked about students checking their facebook accounts almost 2 to 1 over their email address.

i do think think the trend is towards social media.

i also think it gives people more control and interaction over the whole relationship. with email, its mostly push marketing.

also, with social stuff, its more quick hitting. its just fits our fast passed world better. email oddly enough has become a very slow communication.

social media also just feels more personable to most people. i think social media is also more transparent. and it gives users a way to communicate with other "subscribers" more easily. which i think keeps people a little more accountable than blasting out emails knowing the people on the other end of the email have no real way of communicating with the others that got the email.

so if you send crap out via email the consequences is that you lose a few people. if you do it via social media, your followers can easily ban together and shut you down almost instantly. this keeps people more accountable for their content, which i think is a good thing.

Email is now turning out to be strictly business, while social media being strictly personal. You cant Facebook inbox your manufacturer to get some clothes done! Although, that would be cool!

i do not think so, basically because we still see merchants out there only wanting email traffic.

I think social media will never replace the value of email. Social media is just a way to increase communication with friends.

There is too much money in mailing.
why do you think mass mailers continue to mass mail.
call it spam or whatever you like, bottom line, its making someone a ton of cash.

I don't think this will going to happen. All business are still using email for communication because it is more formal compared to social media.

email marketing is still effective but not bigger and effective than SMM. Today facebook, twitter, Linkedin etc are more powerful ways of finding target audience.
