how can Pinterest increase my site's PR and traffic?

  • It's simple... Every photo you put up on Pinterest have a backlink to a site. If the photos are pointing back to your website you can get a lot of backlinks if the photo is great and you get a lot of repins...

    • Exactly as you say... Pinterest is an enormous well of backlinks...
  • It seems to be a great way to spread a backlink to your site. I have been playing with this as a learning exercise. I haven't tried every type of photo on there yet, but I have found that motivational quotes spread fast for me. Yesterday I pinned a plain picture that said "do something every day that scares you", and since last night it has been repinned 140 times. If you pin them from your site they will have your url as the source. If you own the picture I guess you could put your url on the bottom of the picture if you wanted. I am just experimenting for my own knowledge so I am not driving traffic anywhere yet.

    • Great idea. If you own the image, you can upload then go back into the settings of the image and add a link back to your site.
  • Yeap, I agree with what Antony said, inspiration stuff tends to spread fast.
I'm currently diving into self-improvement niche, so I pinned all inspirational quotes via Pinterest.

For me, the traffic from pinterest is not much as compared to organic traffic , facebook, and stumbleupon. But its FREE traffic, so I wouldn't complain much. Plus, pinning 1 image only take extra 5 seconds of work, so... y not? =)
  • Hi guys,

Yes every image you pin or repin allows you to edit the link to point to wherever you want it to be but they are all 'nofollow' so you are not getting a backlink in that case. The only time you will get a dofollow backlink is if the image is pinned directly from one of your sites then any repins will carry your link.

Check the source of a pin and you'll see it's nofollow. Pinterest had to do that just as Facebook did as they were getting spammed to oblivion.

Quotes and infographics always seem to do well for repins

    • yes the traffic benifits outweight the seo benefits that you can gain from pinterest.

however if you use the traffic wisely you can gain a lot of social traffic.
  • Make sure to name your board the keyword phrase....

    • Creators Against Pinterest: Nasty Linking Practices

No SEO benefits here. In fact, probably negative SEO.

Some people might have some use for the type of traffic they get from Pinterest and be willing to sacrifice for it.
    • Yes just to clarify, photos pinned directly from YOUR sites to a Pinterest board = backlinks, otherwise, no. e.g. if you upload an image from your PC direct to Pinterest, no backlink. In that case instead, upload to your blog, site, etc. and pin it from there.

  • What I do is every content I write in my blog, I create my own image and than share to pinterest. I never think for SEO, I think for visitor, if from pinterest I get good quality visitor than my image will be repin all the time.. so you need have a good quality content with image where people will visit your site and repin your image..

I never use any auto mated service, all automated service become spammy in end of the day.. I hope this helps..

  • Classic example of how pinterest pins get ranked...

Do a search for "steampunk gadgets" in google and you will see a board on page 1. Now it is only a 2k exact match....but you get the idea....that's how it is done
  • The thing is with pintrest.com you get really highly targeted traffic if you have the right images. No point in having generally kitten/puppy images if you have a gaming blog.

Pinterest is the next generation of Social media. Basically it works just as Andrei has said. You post pictures and people can click it. You can also redirect them to your own sites when they click it and that is why it is so valuable.
  • I recently have seen a lot of Pinterest pages popping up on Google. They seem to like them. I would create pages then create high PR backlinks to them just like you would any other page.
  • My tips for getting big traffic from Pinterest...

    1. Include at least one high quality image on every post/page

    2. Include a Pin It button in at least one prominent position on the page - ideally close to the image.

    3. Get lots of traffic from other sources. A small proportion of that traffic will start Pinning which will send some traffic from Pinterest. The traffic from Pinterest will Pin a lot more which will send you more traffic.

  • As mentioned in one of the replies here, I can see motivators getting a lot of repins, especially if the image used for the motivator is amusing. There was a huge buzz back when Pinterest was still in its early stages. It may have died down for a bit, but that doesn't mean you can completely ignore something that can help you spread links to your site in some sort of a "visual" way.
  • images are getting more and more valued as content, because believe me google can see original ones
  • Images are excellent but it is equally as important to get the board description right, as in best possible keyword/search term and create a well crafted description with quality keywords.
  • you can rock with pinterest if you have a collection of appealing pics, tons of backlinks.

    • Links yes, but they're all nofollow so are they really backlinks?
