New Kid Named Pheed On The Block Rubbing Shoulders With Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!

There is a new silicon valley startup company called Pheed that was recently launched. I have been playing around with it for the past few hours, and so far I really like it.

You can share your pheeds such as text feeds, video feeds, broadcasts, audio feeds etc...

Some celebrities are already on board I see, such as Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, Ashley Tisdale, Stacy Dash, as well as a few others.

Looks like Pheed is offering people the option for it's users to charge a fee to subscribe to a particular persons pheed, if that person so chooses.

Which is a cool bonus!

Pheed is looking like a great site for marketers so far. I think Pheed is going to be extremely popular in the next year.

What are your opinions? Has anyone tried this site yet?

You should capitalize on that. If you've had that domain prior to this new site, you could claim trademark infringement. A trademark can be established by first use in commerce and clearly, the word pheed used in this manner is unique. They might pay you a wad of money for that domain, particularly if they received a cease and desist.

Nope. Unless he has been actively using and marketing that name they wouldn't have to pay him squat. It doesn't look like there is or has been much happening on that domain.

If I register whateveritis.com and let it sit there and tomorrow some company comes along with a business and trademarks that same term, they can usually rightfully get that domain name from me for nothing. The story would be different if I could prove I had already built a successful brand around that but isn't the case in this instance.

I've taken back domain names from people in this exact same situation. They had a domain name sitting there, I had the term trademarked so they had to give up the domain to me.

This rule is obviously harder to enforce for words such as sex.com and the like because they are not potential brand names, they are common words. But for something like pheeds, it's easily trademarked and they would have a very good chance of getting that domain from you (if they wanted it).

I disagree for a few reasons:

One, they just relaunched a new concept, which is about 9 years after I registered my domain. They haven't marketed the brand over this time. In other words, I bought the domain 9 years before they attempted to create a brand.

Two, if they tried to take it from me and I felt they had a legal right to it, I would simply change the domain to a charity site to pheed poor people without food or other non-related topic.

Three, I suggest you do a search of this forum as well as the older Snitz version for the term "pheed" or "pheeds" and see how I have used the term over the years.

It doesn't matter when it was purchased IF you have done nothing with that domain. Otherwise people would just go out and purchase every single combination of words that could ever take place.

If they trademark the term and can show you have the domain name they have trademarked and you are not using it and have not been using it, it's likely you would be asked to surrender it.

You COULD do that. The issue is the courts would see you have done nothing with the domain for 9 years and then decided to do something with it ONLY when a trademark holder tried to get that domain. I doubt many judges would side with you. They would see exactly what you were trying to do.

If you have been using the domain over the years, then good. I didn't know that. I was talking about people who just purchase domains and do nothing with them. But if you were going up against a big brand you would probably need to show some pretty good evidence of you using that domain in order to keep it. Just having the domain mentioned a couple of times in a forum would not be suffice (I don't think).

In order to prevail in UDRP arbitration, the mark owner must prove three things: (1) the domain name is identical or confusingly similar to the trademark in question; (2) the registrant has no rights or legitimate interests in the domain name, and (3) the domain name was registered and/or is being used in bad faith.

My pheeds.com is actually a mirror of Wikipedia (which is legal) from about 2003.

I had a search engine for the wikipedia content before Wikipedia did. And I have a cool "mod rewrite" set up on it to create pages on the fly from the wikipedia search engine based on any URL (within reason).

For example, make any URL using the format:
    www.pheeds.com/your-keywords.html
    www.pheeds.com/elvis-presley.html
    www.pheeds.com/rolling-stones.html
    www.pheeds.com/george-washington.html

Give it a test...Just create a keyword based URL based on the examples above and the mod rewrite will create an HTML "page" with the Wikipedia search results.

I/we also converted the Wikipedia database of articles to RSS format. Again, this was 8-9 years ago, before most people even knew what RSS was...

Pheed gives you the option to monetize either by applying a monthly subscription fee to your
channel or setting a pay-per-view live broadcast event. In both cases, you select the pricing
    and earn directly.

Checked it out and well, for the most part I'm impressed.

I'm already seeing some Celebs charging a fee on "Premium Pheeds".

The interface needs some getting used to though.

An internet Marketer charging a fee for his "juicy pheeds" perhaps? (okay just a thought there).

Let's see how this goes in the coming months. Fingers Crossed. (Oh, and yeah, this is probably a good time to pick up the great usernames).

The reason I have cows is just to make the site stand out. Every other RSS site was/is plain, and I thought if I used cows my site would be more brandable.

And...I think cows are funny too.

oh man! This is a cool idea, this is gunna take off I can see it now.

Here is a better desciption for those scratching their head.

    Quote from the pheed site.

    ====.

Pheed is a new social media platform soft-launched on October 1 2012, from Los Angeles, California by a group of friends from the technology and entertainment community.
We offer the standard sharing features such as text, photos and videos, but decided to spice it
up a little by adding new stuff like voice-notes, audio clips and live-broadcasting.
Then we sat and thought, 'wouldn't be cool if we can offer users a way to monetize their
    content if they wanted to?'.

Pheed gives you the option to monetize either by applying a monthly subscription fee to your
channel or setting a pay-per-view live broadcast event. In both cases, you select the pricing
    and earn directly.

Or, you can always share and hang out for free, it's up to you.

    ==================

I am gunna try use this in the coming weeks as a test.

The service sucks. They are probably paying the celebs to use it. The majority of communications are likely fake accounts run by the owners. As of now, it's a wannabe Tumblr and I don't see that changing.

My only thought is why would I pay to view someone's pheed, when I can see their feeds on twitter, and facebook for free?

I actually laughed at this because I can just imagine how many IMers had dollar signs pop into their eyes as soon as they read that.

And I guess we better get used to all the new Pheed WSO's that are going to pop up, and I wonder who will be the first to coin and use the term "pheed marketing"

    I would beg to differ.

My guess is they have just created feeds for some popular celebrities so people like you think those celebrities are already on board and using the service. It gives a sense of social proof. But I would bet a lot of money on the fact those feeds were created by the website and not those celebrities.

I went and checked it out. It looks OK, but you have to wonder why they are not pimping it. Has some of the features of the most popular social sites, but here is yet another learning curve. Probably at the expense of your other social offerings. I'm aware that Google is putting a lot of emphasis on social now, but there has to be a stopping point. Just sayin'...
