Facebook App Question

I recently visited a site which had a Facebook App embedded where you had to to log in do the usual permission access in order to view the post which also gave permission for the site/FB page to update your timeline. Now the picture itself was still viewabled but hazzy.

I accepted the app as the post looked interesting enough. A couple of days later I went back in and saw that the amount of people using the app had jumped by like 10k and the amount of people using the app to see the posts on the website was over 60k.

Now I'm guessing, and if I'm wrong then please correct me, that the guys who own the site are not stuttered by Facebooks new rules. But I was wondering if anyone else has seen something similar and if so how they guys went about creating the app to work that way. It seems like a great way to send regularly updated posts viral.
