To me, search engine marketing, (SEM), is a real thing and these days ANY marketing that does not include search engines is leaving a LOT of money on the table,

But SEO, (even though Ive allowed myself to be called that for a long time) has never really existed. BECAUSE WE DO NOT OPTIMIZE SEARCH ENGINES.
As Eric pointed out, it has come to be known as optimizing web sites/pages for the purpose of securing top organic placement in search engines for specific keyword searches, but as was alluded to by someone else, placement without conversion is the epitome of futility.

thats why to me you cant do SEM without paying attention to SEO, (as it's called). It is all Search Engine Marketing and now you have to throw social media management, (SMM??), into the mix. Now social is also SEM or at least should be,. If you're not thinking of it in those terms , then again, you're leaving a LOT of money on the table.

I'm actually kind of grateful that SEO is finally dying out, and we are all starting to refer to it as something less confusing and something that we actually do.

Search Engine Optimization is the process of increasing a web site’s rank and the amount of quality traffic sent to it via the organic search results of a search engine for specific keywords by optimizing various elements of each web page within a site. Phew! That was a mouthful. For those of you less technical and unfamiliar with some of the previously mentioned terms I’ll try and explain this concept with an analogy.

SEO (search engine optimization) is part of SEM (search engine marketing). SEM is include both SEO and PPC (pay per click). SEO is about content optimization and backlining.

sem- search engine marketing
covers everything.. seo.. ppc.. brand management.. rep building etc etc..

Often people get confused with this one as the term has changed from PPC over to SEM over recent months/years.

Good SEO is needed for SEM. But SEM is not so important for SEO.
It is my personal comment.

SEM is a broader term than SEO. Take note that SEO is part of SEM. SEM includes all forms of internet marketing such as paid inclusions, traditional ads, and ppc. More importantly, SEM cannot be materialized without the existence of SEO since it promotes user experience. Moreover, it is a great option for internet marketers who are short in budget for the more expensive PPC ads.

As per my suggestion, SEO( Search Engine Optimization) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's natural or u-paid search results. On the other hand SEM ( Search Engine Market ) is the form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization (both on-page and off-page) as well as through advertising (paid placements, contextual advertising, and paid inclusions)

The input by all has been very helpful. The question I would like to add is which method gets the best results.

The elaboration of SEO is Search Engine Optimism and SEM means Search Engine Marketing. The two names are suggesting the the function of them I guess.

There is a deep relationship between SEO and SEM.
