Post frequently, craft up nice title with use of hash tags. Follow related people with your interest.

Not to hijack the thread, but i watch SEO videos and so on and where there is a twitter address shown i go and follow. It puzzles me then, when "experts" in SEO only have 4 or 5 thousand followers and post the most inane stuff. On the flip side, check out "twit grader"; it puzzles me again that some people open an account and get 20,000 followers in a few weeks. I managed to build up a few thousand by tweeting relevant content, links to things of interest, retweeting good tweets and linking back to my blog. Check out twitter fall. Useful for finding people who have similar interests. Then click on their bio, go to their website and learn what they are interested in.

Update relevant status follow users that are on the same niche, use hasg tags to mention relevant page and RT useful information.

I participate in various twitter chats and usually end up getting followers from them. Just start talking about whatever is trending with the hashtag, and post your thoughts. Also, many niches have twitter chats throughout the week. Here's a somewhat comprehensive list:

At the start, you have to manually manage your twitter account. Start with your friends and family. Spend at least 2 or 3 hours a day to check the status of your account. Twitter is a give and take process. If you follow others, they will follow you too as long as you have great content along with your hashtags.

Once you already set up a significant amount of followers, it's the time that you can use automated tweeting. However, don't forget to keep in touch with your followers everyday and personally answer their queries or opinions.

Keep your Twitter updated. Use appropriate hashtags and make sure that your posting stuff that actually help people or maybe stuff that's interesting enough.

If you don't have the time to do that then outsource it. Just make sure that you know the basics before handing it over to someone

Twitter has a daily limit of 1000 following, and each account has a limit for 2000 following. You could follow more people ( more than 2000 ) but they have some ratio for followers : following.
That means until more people start following you, you can't follow people more than 2000.

Well the key i think will be to follow people with the same interest, i mean no bots you have to follow real people... then once that is done you must post quality content without spamming to get as much interest from your followers as possible.

It takes hard work and patience to be able to really get a good, quality following in Twitter (without resorting to buying or spamming your followers). My advice is to follow people/industries that belong to your industry, people who add certain keywords to their bio, or even those who follow people that you follow. Twitter also encourages that proactive culture of sharing. The more you link/retweet others, more follower will reciprocate this act. And that is exactly what you should do to increase your follower count.
You may also do some self-promotion of your website or blog posts, etc., however, you need to be mindful of the fine thin line line that you shouldn't cross. Otherwise, you tend to to have an image of a spammer. Not only won't you get more followers, you will also annoy your existing followers and many might unfollow you.

Make sure you post regularly, at least every 3 -4 hours. Also make sure your circle consists of people within your industry and target market.

I would include the idea of following other authorities within your interest, twitter has a way of gathering many "like-interest" individuals together, so start there if you're just getting started.

twitter has a good thing, they're segmenting the followers to a specific niches and industry. All you need to do is just add them and interact with them. Not spamming them, what won't last long. lol
