Gravitar and how it does or doesnt work in seo ...

Hi All,

Recently I came across a compelling video telling me to use Gravitar as often as I could and post my gravitar profile on the niche blog sites that I visited and that google would take this as a very postive signal that I was active in my niche.

I am wondering if any of you do this, and my concern is that surely the whole point of social networking, and googles original plan was that if a site went viral naturally then MANY different people with unique names would point back to your site?

SOOOO when you people visit blogs in your niche and leave a comment with anchor text name and your site .. do you use different anchor text names or do you see value in somehow using gravitar everywhere for Googles sake?

    From my experience, most gravitars link back to your website if you enter a url before leaving a comment or have a profile created. With people using them everywhere to increase their link history they are also using them for a social or branding standpoint, you would want to use the same gravitar across the board for this reason.

    So to your point about influencing Google, I think it does and I think it will continue to increase. Images are a highly affective way to optimize websites and always will be.

    i dont think it matters at all for link juice, the image doesnt help with that.
    what matters is the link. The image doesnt have any alt text and if it does it would only
    benefit the site where you commented.

    G+ will add a Gravatar profile if you have one, so you can be pretty darned sure that Google is/will be factoring in Gravatar profiles into rankings.

    My advice - go to GOOD blogs in your niche(s) and make GOOD comments using your Gravatar.

    Gravatars are not a signal that your site is viral. They are a signal that you are active in your niche. When you are active in your niche, you link back to your website from your comments with your name. It does not have anything to do with going viral.

    Gravatars have NOTHING to do with SEO. All they do is provide a point of branding for you or your brand. If you consistently use the same gravatar and text name (Which had better darn well be either your name or the name of your company), you will show the industry that you are active in posting replies on blogs and are knowledgeable on the subject matter. Basically you're beefing up your "street cred" within your niche.

    Try to go around this by using different gravatars or posting different text names and Google will penalize your site. Hard. That's why it pays to follow the rules so you don't get slapped by Google.

    Gravatars are good because people can associate an image with your brand. If you use a photo of yourself, it shows that you are a human and not a spam bot.

    I always use my name in blog comments because let's face it, blog comments don't work for SEO anymore, so it's better to be real instead of coming across as potential spam...

    This is for a blog, anyway. If you have a niche site, though, I'd still use a name
