Is Facebook Killing Message Boards?

Present message board excluded of course, but many of the boards I use to go to seem dead. Maybe it was just there time, but I think it also might be because more people are flocking to fb and twitter.

Thoughts?

You're asking this question on a message board, you know that right? I have seen some die out but more have also popped up. They'll be around forever... remember bolt?

I actually think that Facebook is the worst substitute for message boards (at least, those who share WF's format).

I say this not just from business experience but from my even longer participation in other forums as well.

When it comes to heavier and more serious discussions (like talking business, arguing politics, making critiques etc), the font of a forum is at least more readable compared to the tiny text of Facebook posts.

For the light stuff, forum games are not as fun because Facebook posts lack the sheer amount of options and knick-knacks. :p

Yeah, I think the ones I use to frequent just kind of died off. A message board needs new blood every once in a while or they seem to slowly die off.

So true (and keep spam bots nonexistent of course ). Although, this is something we should also keep in mind when we use forums to connect and market. In fact, I'll add as a side note that some markets aren't likely to be found on an online forum 100% of the time. It's the same way that not all types of businesses stand to gain much from social marketing on Facebook.

Forums and message boards will never go extinct for many reasons.

True forums are for discussion for specific topic while facebook seems to be good for hangout with friends.

Message boards will never be obsolete, they retain information about specific topics and they are resourceful for information that many people look for... You don't get that from FB or twitter..

Facebook is not killing message boards.
It is simply dominating them in terms of popularity and number of users.

Number of users? Perhaps. Popularity? Maybe as a social network but not necessarily as a marketing tool (at least 100% of the time) nor as a means of discussion, sharing information etc. I know at least one group on Facebook that is just meant to represent a much larger online forum. And as usual, most of the discussions still occur on the forum itself.

In fact, I know plenty of threads in other message boards that came up because of a discussion that happened on Facebook. :p

I'm finding it stupendously difficult to start a new forum. My FB pages are doing rather better.

I think that many forum message boards could do with an image overhaul, but they definitely are a different niche to fb. Fb seems much more fleeting in both its depth and responses, but I don't know for sure..
