You can use Facebook as a people search engine to only add in people that would be perfect for what you are offering. Add them as friends. Stay involved in their lifes. Become a real friend. Share entertaining and valuable stuff on your wall. Engage in conversations. Don't be a pushy salesman. Be a asset and friend to your crowd. Start building your audience.

1- Search like minded people in FB search bar like Online Money, Pet Lover or whatever is your keywords
2- Send them friend request.
3- Share some valuable stuff at your wall.
4- After few days send personal message to them. (Dont just write spammy or common message, check their profiles, read About section and try some personal message to create some interaction, Dont offer or invite anything in the first message).

What I basically do is create a fan page around a recent news or event, I drop it in social media places, specifically Reddit, on the fan page I create a little bit of controversy or I take side on the news, from there I see what is the profile of the people that have clicked like and see if there are some broad offers in Offervault that match the profile of the people I have in my fan page.

Just from personal experience starting a company less than a year ago, make some interesting and relevant content on your website, post it to your fan page and pay 15 bucks to promote it to around 2,000 people. Make sure however in your promoted post that you build on Facebook that you ASK the readers to LIKE your facebook fan page.

I'm not quite sure why everyone is telling you to market your business through your blog. Blogs are great to get more information out about your company but the question here was how to start your social media campaign from zero.

Some great strategies are listed here but if you are a brick and mortar business there are some missing statements. you want to set up your FB to be optimized for graph search, then you want to find out where your customers "hang out" and have conversations with them there.

You can use sms opt-in to get them to your chosen social media platforms, offer discounts or other special values for giving you a like, etc. Once you have a few likes, get them to interact with you...the average fB user has over about 200 friends and when they like or comment on your page it shows up in those friend's feeds. ..there are also ways to target those friends with direct ads.

2.Try to target your local market at first.

If you're starting from zero, it really is a marketing (traffic) question. As cheesy (simple) as it may sound, it boils down to who your customers are and where do you think they are? Facebook pages? What kind? Groups? Individual friends, etc...

Once you have a good idea of the who and the where.. simply just message enough of them to validate whether you are actually right.

Once you've validated it is really these guys you're after, work out an arrangement (joint venture/cross promotion) where you help the group/list/page owner get what they want (e.g. special offer to your product/service). This is one "free" way you can get started with.

Facebook works for me. I don't recommend to send friend requests to the people you don't know. They don't like it and if they flag you then you are going to be banned from Facebook forever. So be careful! Try to communicate with few people every day on Facebook, give them advise and they will "Like" your page. You will get 500 real likes on Facebook less than a year if you communicate with just a couple people per day. Update your blog daily so they can read more information and share with their friends.

I use Google Adwords and FB ad for promotion and share links to web pages and blog articles on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+ pages.
