NEWBIE QUESTION- what are page 'likes' gonna do for a facebook page?

sorry for this question but i'm really new to IM and don't know much :confused:
Since i'm seeing lots of people going on about FB likes so i started to wonder what likes actually do. Any help would be appreciated if you promise not to laugh at this question :p

    The count of "Like" is an indicator on how is the company/product/service is popular among social community/ people.

    More likes means more love, more reach, more sales, more awareness= Great Business.

      oh so it is just an indicator of how famous and stuff,. i thought it'll be like: more likes=u rank higher just like youtube views :p

    Facebook likes are not just an indicator of interest to your brand or account (although it depends on the quality of likes).
    Likes help to spread the information about your FB page among potential likers. When a person likes a page (or a post, or a picture), it appears in his timeline. Also you can see which pages were liked by them in their profile. So the more likes you get, the more is the possibility that other people will notice them in the timeline or profile of their friends and go and have a look at your page and your website.
    And yes, initially likes are trust. If you have a widget on your website that shows the number of FB likes, it is a factor that may influence your visitors' behavior.
