How I got over 3000 new facebook page followers in a day

It has been a long time since I have posted something here so i'm going to write about a recent experience I have had....

It got me over 3000 people to like my page within a time span of 10-12 hours..

I won't mention my Facebook page here in order to protect my scarcely tapped niche but lets take an example... lets say I have a website where I sell perfumes to residents of my town/city..... I have a budget of $50 a day to spend in advertising and marketing... Instead of putting it all on ads, I decided to give out a $40 cologne for free... so i made an image in MS Paint stating, " Like and Share this page and get a chance to win XYZ perfume"... I also mentioned that the random winner will be selected in 24 hours.... I put in $5 as my Facebook ad budget and allocated a CPM of $0.05....

Thats all I did.... Within 10 hours my page had over 3000 likes and that post was shared over 4000 times!

Now... the down side of this method....

1- I got MANY people calling me to check whether this competition was for real ..

2- When I announced the winner...approx 50 people congratulated the winner in the comments section.. whereas over a 100 started with hate messages stating im a fake :/ .... I decided to post a photo of the winner with the item... some of the people who were criticizing stopped whereas the rest started claiming " He gave away the gift to a friend'

3- When I make posts about my products and special offers on my sites, I hardly get any response from these Facebook fans I got through the competition.. I realized that is because I targeted the wrong audience... these people fanned my page just to get a freebie.. they were/are not interested in buying anything....

Conclusion: this trick got me a lot of fans in NO time however it was a complete failure to my cause because the people I got were the exact opposite of what I want... however I think that this method might work for some... If you try it and it works for you, do let me know.... If you notice anything wrong I did and something i could do differently, do let me know

signing off..

Don't worry about it not working for your current audience. You found a method that definitely works, now find an audience it works with

You are risking your page getting banned by breaking Facebook's TOS on contests. I would never follow OP's advice unless I could afford to lose my account.

    Hey Mark,

I think the best way to get by this is by using Video Marketing. If winners can post a testimonial or short video that will help to increase the "real" factor. The more "real" you can provide the much better the response will be, but no cheezy videos.

I wish you all the best for next time round.

Well its a facebook ad but for a post on my page, it did not link to an external page... i did not use the 'promote' function at all... my opinion, its pretty useless....

Well this works perfect for where you want freebie seekers. People willing to do anything to get free stuff.

    The SEO possibilities are endless.

To the others points posting and running contest inside an app, protected by a like gate may be a better option.

You obviously have not read the Facebook Terms of Service, and you will be most likely lose your facebook page pretty soon, by trusting blindly someone who is breaking completely the Facebook Terms of Service and doing illegal contests on Facebook.

You haven't even read the official Facebook links pointing out the fact that Contests on Facebook incentivizing likes and shares are strictly illegal

We used to do weekly giveaways on the Facebook page of one of the popular brands I managed. There were 3 things that helped:

    1. Repetition. The first time will always lead to skepticism as to its validity. If you're doing it every week, and there are different winners in different cities every week that goes away immediately.

    2. We always SAID we were giving away one, but if a giveaway ever had a LOW response rate (like only 5 or 10 people) - we would give away one to everyone who participated. Cost of goods on the product is always cheaper than marketing.

    3. Everyone who DIDN'T win would get a coupon, gift card, or free item with purchase.

Of the 3, repetition is key. Even if your audience is only paying attention to get the freebie, they will still share it every week and stay engaged - and that engagement keeps your posts in their news feed.

Very good case Mark. I'll try it too.

Now I'm just a little bit concerned. It's really illegal get likes and shares promoting a thing for Free?

What I understood of all this is, I can promote a product for free but I just cant right that is free. Doind this I'm according with the FB rules. I'm correct?

    Thanks in advance,

      Thanks in advance,
You are correct.. The word "Free" cannot be used... free is a very controversial term... technically speaking, the item you are giving is not for free. You are asking for a like or share in return.. your audience might not be paying in money but they are giving something of value. Because of that the word free is incorrectly used.....

It will also depend on what you are giving away.. if you start giving away painkillers then im pretty sure you will get banned..

Even though there are bailiff who control the draw, there are people who believe lottery is fake. So it doesn't surprise me that some people thought your giveaway was a scam.

Nevertheless, you can still satisfy yourself with the fact that over 3000 persons trusted you, according to the number of "like" you received within a few hours!

By the way, I'd rather give you a "like" on Facebook than giving informations about myself such as my email address, name etc, or paying an amount of money.

Hi Mark, congrats on your 3k! Have you heard of Nat Geo's Mega Food Snap & Share Contest which they ran on FB? I don't quite remember what they were giving away, but in order to win each person had to submit a picture of a food item they like onto Nat Geo Asia's Fanpage, the picture with the most number of likes would win the giveaway. You could try something similar as doing so will add an element of legitimacy to the contest since the pictures speak for themselves.

As for the sore losers, let them whine, they are actually helping your Page go viral, now all you have to do is answer their comments with some proof & logic and you would have turned their hate posts into a constructive device aiding your cause. Also if they are the ones making an accusation then the burden of proof falls upon them, ask them to show how they know you did so if things get too dirty, but do be nice

    Hope this helps!

Thinking Of Running A Contest on Facebook? Think Again! | Facebook

Facebook just released the latest revision of their Promotion Guidelines - as pertains to promoting a contest, competition, drawing or sweepstakes using your personal profile and/or Fan Page.

Facebook members CANNOT use the platform for any kind of contest, drawing, competition or sweepstakes without the prior written approval of Facebook

In order to work with a Facebook account representative, here’s the form you’ll need to fill out. [NOTE: the form has two fields - your country and your estimated budget starting at $ 10,000

Apparently the person writing the article has never actually worked with a facebook advertising account manager...you only need to spend $50 a day for one month in order to qualify for the program... the first two days, a rep is allocated to you to 'fix' the page; make sure its well organized.. after that, you get an account manager who helps you with a strategy to get a larger and active fan base......

bottom line, i am running another contest. posted a facebook ad for it , got approved and using some ideas i have got here to get better results

      will keep you posted!!

Do you buy competitor backlink data from the likes of MajesticSEO / SEOProfiler / SEOMoz / AHRefs?

Manage it with Backlinks Explorer to help you get more backlinks more quickly.

I always find that offering a runners up prize helps as well. You need people to believe they have a realistic chance of getting a return on the effort it takes to like your page. (as silly as that sounds).

Mark here is one thing that you could do to optimize the experience for the users that signed up for your give away. You could do a graph search on your own page to see what the people that liked your page like.

This would allow you to offer them more content and value by giving them things that interest them and help them get what they are looking for.

Do they like a certain book or magazine? Then write about that and share your ideas on something that you read from there.

This will go a long way to help add value to those that have liked your page. Find out what it is they want and what it is they are looking for and then help them get that.

Your contest was a great first step. Now just make sure you deliver those that signed up on your page something that they deem valuable.

Great point made there. Sometimes the easiest methods in getting traffic/likes/whatever it may be don't always necessarily turn out to be the most EFFECTIVE methods we could've used.
