I don't have any social media things going on except twitter which I still don't get but everyone says I need social media. So I know Facebook is bigger right now but which one does everyone think will be the king over the next 5 years and which is the easiest to use. Remember this is coming from someone who knows nothing about either. Also do I get a personal account and work my business into it or just go with a business account.

Personally I think Facebook is the biggest right now, definitely easy to use as most people already have a Facebook account.

However Google+ is also easy to use once you get into it, and I have a hunch Google+ ranks better and is better for SEO, just saying....

yo can have a business account for all the social media. You don't need social media if you have no idea how it will benefit you so don't worry about it.

facebook, twitter and G+ are the big ones but there are others..the ultimate question you should be asking yourself is: " are my customers on these platforms and can i engage them.."

there are very simple ebook/videos on youtube etc that can help you setup accounts but don't do it because everyone else is doing it...do it because you want more customers or want to engage existing ones etc

    hope this helps

It depends on what your business is. Facebook is the largest social networking site and easier to use compared to Google+. I don't know what you want to promote but you can reach different types of people in FB and Twitter. Google+, I think has a business-feel setting.

Google+ might work better for a tech niche. From what I understand, google+ has a much higher concentration of tech enthusiasts than facebook, which is basically everyone.

You can use all the social media sites to promote your business. Think of it at this way: You have to utilize all the resources you have for now. Do not think about what will be big in the next five years. I mean, sign up for every social media accounts. I think that would not hurt.

If you are focused on ranking and visibility of a page and you are using social media sites like Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, LinkedIn etc, than I will go with Google Plus. Because Google plus is more effective than all other social media site and gives direct link to your website.

Get all the exposure you can get. Since it's free, why don't you utilize both and see which gives you more leads and sales? If you are purely looking for your business to get known, Facebook is a really good choice but if you are looking for more serious targets, I think you can find them more on Google+.

    Hey marks2424

I recommend you do both. First, you need Facebook because your prospects are there. If they like your products/brand, they will look for you on the social network and like your page. That's how fans are. Their friends see the activity and hopefully they'll like your page too.

HOWEVER... if you want long-term SEO benefits for your business website (like higher rankings for target keywords, better visibility) you would want to focus on Google+. Plus is owned by Google and your activities on it can benefit your site rankings.

For example, when you search for a certain product online you might find those thumbnails of authors appearing with their articles/pages. And you would most likely click a search result with an accompanying photo than a plain text search result, right? Your prospects will do the same too. That's called Authorship Markup and your markup won't appear on search results unless *drum roll please* you link that content with your Google+ profile. In fact that little thumbnail IS your Google+ profile photo. That's why you need to set up a profile and a business page.

I'm a white label SEO reseller and right now Google+ setup is the most in-demand service from my clients (who are mostly small, local business owners in Indiana).

    Best of luck,
    Rick

Well, both are great ways to engage customers and a profitable way to bring huge traffic. It entirely depends upon you; how effectively you are going to use these platforms. Google+ is a brimming upcoming section which can serve a very fruitful way. Join communities according to your niche. Post valuable links. It will take few hours to take entire overview.

      Hi Mark 2424,

      I would say two things:

      Facebook is more friendly, funny..
Google + is more business oriented.

      So:

If you want to create yourself a network for your business and connect with it, I advice you to use Google + then you can add people from interesting community for you and contact them.

If you want to communicate directly with your audience in a friendly way facebook is better.

No doubt that facebook is bigger than any other social media, and it is almost much easier and simpler to use. But if you can operate a google+ account then you should test on both of them, there may be a tough competition, but you will see the results by yourself.

I think right now Facebook is the way to go. But use Twitter as well. Because with twitter you can add the hashtag. That means you put a # and whatever your keywords/ tags are after that sign. So if you are selling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches you can post- Love PB&J? youlink.com #PB&J #peanut butter #jelly #yummy Anyone looking for any of that will find your post/link. If you are able to connect your niche somehow with something that is currently trending (what everyone is searching for) all the better. As far as Google plus, unless you find yourself with a bunch of people in your circles there by some strange miracle, I would skip it and stick with FB and Twitter...for now. Until the next big thing happens.

You should really get familiar with both sites, and should add Pinterest and Tumblr to your list as well. They're really not that complicated once you get used to them and all have some similarities. Each of these platforms are huge and it doesn't cost anything to take advantage of them.

I haven't read through all the posts and I might repeat what has been already mentioned above, but I think each of the social networks can be useful for a business, whether it is Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. The most important thing is not to create account or profile page wherever possible, but understand why we use a certain social network it and what goals we want to achieve. What is more important is to plan our activity in social networks and always have a well-thought and consistent content strategy at hand.
Today Facebook has more than 1.23 bln active users, while G+ is just gathering more speed.

For me, facebook is better because it is user friendly. Even newbies can easily use it. But i've heard a lot from successful online people about google. They said it is the #1 when it comes to ranking because of the SEO. Of which i agree because not all likes social media. Some people will just open their computer to search for something they need to buy. And google is the best on this.
