Should you promote a post?

So we have all moved on and have accepted that Facebook is now only going to show your fanpage status updates to a small portion of your fans. Sure it sucks but thats the way it is and it seems most of us have moved on. However the question now comes to mind: Should we promote our posts to give them that artificial edge rank and make sure people see it? The answer is simple. It depends:
Below we will take a look at the two ways you can promote your status update and well have a look at how those promotion options measure up to other forms of Facebook marketing.
1) Promote the post to your followers and there friends:
So this seems simple. You have a message you just need to get to your followers, perhaps its a special on your product or service. Perhaps is a announcement you want all your customers to know about. Whatever it is you need to get it to as many of your existing fan base as you can. So you think to your self why not promote the post. Well lets see how good if an idea this is.

This is a screenshot of us clicking to promote a post on the First Social Apps Facebook page. While the price will vary depending on the number of fans in general the scale will be the same. As you can see in the image it will cost us $50 to promote our post to a maximum of 12,000 people. Thats a CPM (cost per thousand) of $4.16
However you could also simply run a normal Facebook ad and target people connected to you and there friends. Doing this will give you a MUCH lower CPM of around $0.40.So in this scenario it is approximately 10x more costly to promote the post directly from the ‘boost post’ option in your fan page than it is to just create an advert.
So does this mean that you should always create an advert when you want to promote a post? Well not nessisarly. Using the boost post is much more costly however it is quicker. Also a promoted post will show in your fans news feed instead of being an ad in the right side of there screen so its likely to get you a more immediate result. So to sum up, if you have a message or announcement that you want to make to your fans and it absoultly MUST get in front of them as quickly as possible then the ‘boost post’ is an expensive but effective option. However if your making an announcement about something that is going to happen a week from now or two weeks or longer than your generally much better off creating an advert.

2) Ok the second way to promote a post. Besides promoting a post to your fans you also no have the option to promote the post to ‘everyone on Facebook’. So you see this option and your thinking .. ‘cool I can promote my post to everyone on Facebook ‘ , well this might be exactly what makes it a bad idea.

In this example Facebook is giving us the option to promote our post to everyone on Facebook for $300 with an estimated reach of 160,000. Thats a CPM of $1.87 which is much better than promoting to our friends. However you should take note of one major thing. The only targeting option we have is location. We cant target by age, by interest, by anything. So basically literately everyone will see this post. Most of who will have NO interest in what we do. In essence this is an un targeted option. Something that is often a waste. Sure 160,000 people will see your post, but if only 20% are even remotely interested in what your doing that makes your effective CPM 5X higher.

Facebook advertising has in general a lower CTR (click through rate) than other forms of advertising. However because Facebook has such a massive amount of personal information about its users an advertiser can laser target an ad to make sure only people likely to be interested in your product will see it. When you promote a post ‘to everyone on Facebook’ you are removing the single best aspect of Facebook advertising. Because if this I cant recommend that you promote a post to everyone.
So to sum up:
Promoting a post to your fans and there friends: expensive but effective, probably only a good idea if you must get a message out quick though, other than that just run an ad and enjoy a much lower CPM.
Promoting a post to everyone on Facebook: Not really a good idea since you cant laser target you audience. Many of the people who see your ad will have no interested in your product or service. Your effective CPM will be much higher than what it looks like. Unless you have a very general fan page or something that people of all ages, life styles, education levels, and personality’s will be interested in (which most dont) its probably best to just avoid this option.

Till next time,

This is the huge risk of spending ads on Facebook: your ads might be seen by the wrong people. This is because FB has so many members with so much diversities. FB allows you to get so much exposure but this is useless if it's only seen by those that are way too far off from your targeted market.

Wow! A very wonderful research and publication. I deeply appreciate this. Truly, some of the audience who get to see these promoted posts are irrelevant.

Another way is to tell your Fans to put the mouse under "Like", then to check "Get Notifications" and "Show In News Feed".

I don't know if this the loophole people are looking for, but when FB is charging for something you should get anyway any work around needs to be tried.

It is good to promote a post but paying it in a huge amount,i think it is no longer appropriate. But if you have really lots of extra cash, why not? and if it is really needed to promote, you can do it.

If you are going to invest money in promoting at FB, you should only invest what you can afford to lose. Check for the sources where you can get more traffic for your niche.

Thanks for the informations, I came up with similar results.

But I wanted to add one thing. If you feel like one of your posts "might" go viral, eg. when it receives a much higher amount of likes/shares than your average post, than it might be cost-effective to boost that post as well.

In the beginning I've boosted way too many posts, with only minor results. But as I've boosted the most popular post, I've got around 4000 paid-views, but also 4500 additional views, through increased shares. It's probably still pretty expensive, but if it helps you get the image to go viral, it might be worth the money. In the end I've had 11k reach, 1,4k photoviews, 153 likes, 73 shares and 70 comments, for $20. But you have to keep in mind, my page: https://www.facebook.com/epicpixcom only had around 240 likes at that time.

Well given your example it would have cut your CPM in half about, which means it was still probably over $2, which is high. But you are correct if a post goes viral it is going to change things. However you need to remember than 99% of all posts wont go viral so at best this is gambling.

Yeah, you're right it's probably close to gambling. But at least you're guaranteed to "win", it's just not sure "how much"

Btw. regarding my last campaign. The stats of the 2nd ad went through the roof today. From $0.35 down to $0.09 per like. With strict US/UK/CAN traffic. I'm quite happy with those results, I already increased the duration of the ad, hoping the results might end up being even better. The 2nd ad is now doing 0,744% CTR as well.

Well no your not guaranteed to win, in fact you could loose quite a bit, if your paying $4 CPM to promote a post and you could have payed $0.50 CPM for an ad then you have lost $3.50 per 1k people who see your ad (in the form of a over payment). So if it does go viral you loose money, by overpaying.

Hi I'm a little confused with the liking the post bit. If you have a page surely it's better having that liked. By promoting say a post and even if it does go viral it doesn't necessarily mean likes for your page in the long run?

Its is better to have likes, because if Faceook is going to show your posts to 20% of your fans than having more fans will make that 20% greater obviously. However since Facebook has janked the postings now and only shows your postings to 20% of your fans its not AS important anymore.

People are often confused about what they really want. For example people say they want 'real fans / likes' on the fanpage. 99% of the times thats pure BS. They dont want fans, what they really want is people to get there message. Ie. they want to be able to communicate with potential buyers of there product. So keeping in mind that you want people to hear you, you have to ask yourself is getting fans on your facebook page a good way to get people to hear you? The answer is quite simply NO. Only 20% of the people on you page will see your messages unless you pay Facebook a very high CPM.

This as I said is why I advocate worrying less about fans, and using your facebook page to get people to opt in, (a sweepstakes works well), then get them on your list, now you have a very effective way to get people to hear your message, just email them.

You can hardly get any sales related results from FB promotion. Yes you can get likes and views but converting, very rare chances.

So then I have another question, since most of my friends on facebook (family, job) could care less about what I am doing, how about using fiverr as a way to get your post promoted. A legitimate question and your answer would be most welcome! And if the answer is yes, what would be the best tactic.

Fiverr gigs are almost all promoting using bots, not real people, so i don`t see the point in promoting your post to a bunch of robots
