10,597 visitors with one post and for free, the secret on social media nobody is talking about.

First of all let me show you the proof of what I am saying.

This is a site of one of my clients and these are the numbers up to this Wednesday.

As you can see the site does not have bad numbers at all 14,872 visitors/month (around 500 visitors/day) of free traffic is not too shabby, people spending a minute and 26 seconds on average, but as everything in life we want more, so he called me to see if I could help him.

So these I used my "secret weapon" to generate instant traffic and I pulled these numbers.

You can see that I am posting this the Friday May the 10, so these are current numbers and counting (I will post updates, because I know for experience the traffic it is going to keep pouring).

This month's graph (all together) looks like this:

The source of all this traffic:

The social network nobody is talking about is :..... Reddit.

So here is how I do it:
  • I write an article in point form with interesting information about my main subject.
  • I look for a sub-reddit related to my topic example: If I am promoting a weightloss product I may go to reddit.com/r/loseit, there are as many sub reddits as you ca imagine in all kind of topics, so look for a subreddit related to your topic.
  • Write a headline such as "The 10 foods you never thought will make you fat" or "The 10 foods that will eat your fat away", the type of headlines you would read in the national enquirer (believe me they work).
  • Getting traffic from reddit have several benefits, besides the backlink, it send the social signals that Google is looking for and many people will share your content on facebook (look that the image above) twiter, Google +, etc... just by the same effort,
  • The reddit traffic will last for weeks and little bu little your site will generate authority and will start ranking higher and higher for your terms.

So Traffic from Facebook and Twitter is junk then? reddit is a social site with real people, it's not exactly junk. Traffic is traffic, all has the potential to be converted into leads and sales as long as it isn't from bots.

And the traffic will keep coming for days, here the important to see the benefits from reddit:

    a) It sends the right signals to Google (that your content is getting traffic from social networks)

    b) And people will share if on other authoritative social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Google +

I mostly generate this traffic to send signs to Google that will eventually increase the position on the site for the search engines, nevertheless I always put an email capture to build a list and market via email.

Rubbish, I used Reddit to sell over 1,100 units of a free movie coupon CPA a year are so ago. The offer paid $1.60. I got the traffic from one post like he said. You just have to have the right offer.
The whole deal took less than 45 min to write a quality article and post it. $39.11 a minute for my time is not junk traffic. You of course have to write an article that gets attention and converts to clicks.

Yeah Reddit does indeed send out way more traffic than fb, at least if you don't have many followers on your fb page.

BUT. You have to keep in mind that you'll get blacklisted pretty fast on Reddit, if you only keep posting links to the same website. This happened to me. My shared content was perfectly fine, always got some up-votes and whatnot, BUT still the automatic spam filter started to pick up on my posts, even tho I did not break any rule whatsoever.

I've been told by the mods that you're only allowed to post 10-20% of your links to "unknown" sites, which are basically all sites besides big news-sites, imgur, quickmeme etc.

And a 2nd thing. The reddit traffic always got the lowest productivity of all internet traffic I've ever seen. fb traffic is (if somewhat targeted) is at least twice as productive, other sources sometimes way more.

So even if you're targeting your reddit traffic, you most likely won't see a high productivity with it. As you can see in his screenshot as well. As he got 1,14 pageviews/user, which is basically the lowest of all his sources, with some being 3 pageviews etc.

Bottom line. It's a good source of traffic which you shouldn't miss out on, but be prepared to see lower results off it, compared to other traffic.

I started using Reddit last night and almost right away I got flagged for spam.

Granted out of the gate I linked to an article of mine on my blog and after a few people viewed it, I got a message from the mod that it was spam.

So I started commenting on discussions. A lot. After I felt I've participated enough, I linked to another article from my blog. I got 47 views - and a lot of flack since my blog is a Christian blog in a sea of secularism. And I even posted in the Christianity subReddit (subcategory.) After an hour or so, it got flagged for spam.

I messaged the mods that this was a bogus call. Then I message Reddit HQ. Still no word back and it's been hours. However, the second article is still live and people can comment on it, so maybe the mod's had a change of heart and didn't tell me about it.

Bottom line: Reddit may be a good source for a mainstream, easy-does-it, "every one is good and happy" topic. But know that the threads are rife with trollers and bashers. Pretty much people there to stir the pot and kick up dust. And the mods are ghosts. Silent, inconsistent ghosts.

I hope negative "karma" doesn't mean negative SEO...

Maybe you had something controversial on your site or in your article. Maybe Reddit is pretty strict about anything related to religion. Try with another niche to see what happens.

Using Reddit is nowhere near as simple as just making a post in a sub Reddit and getting floods of traffic. There is an entire culture involved with Reddit and you have to know how things work to get any success. Secondly, Reddit traffic is notorious for not converting. Just look at the stats you posted, the bounce rate jumped almost 10% and the average time duration dropped over by 30 seconds.

On the specific date that you posted to Reddit, your bounce rate was almost 90% and the duration was 20 seconds. Those are not good numbers. Also, Reddit traffic doesn't typically stick unless you wrote an epic post (legendary status) or continuously post similar (and I don't mean just spamming it with links to your site).

This is mainly because of the landscape and atmosphere of Reddit. People go there to BS and waste some time. As for your claims of the SEO benefits, I would be interested in seeing some kind of case study to backup your statement. Because in my experience, temporary traffic spikes don't have a long lasting effect on SEO.

I'm not saying that Reddit is useless. It can definitely be useful for some things. But some of the statements you've made and the way you're presenting Reddit's functionality within IM is a little misleading. This is all coming from my personal experiences and the experiences of many other internet marketers as well.

3 Secrets About Reddit You Did Not Know (And The Big Corporations Are Already Cahsing On)

      • Reddit gets more than a billion page views per week.
      • There are as many sub reddits as you can imagine, each one with a specific set of people and rules starving for new information.
      • You need to intereact with the community and add value so you can start getting traffic.
See the example above, that is what I call a point form article, in my experience those are the ones that work the best.

What you need to understand is that Reddit is a social network, that has its own rules and benefits, you need to comply with them and add value, each sub reddit has their own regulations, so you need to understand them, you cant just go and spam them.

Now it is very important that you interpret in the right way the effect that reddit is giving to your site and the benefits that will bring, this is as close as you would be to create a "viral effect" on a viral effect you create a tsunami of visitors, not all of them will stay for longer, they just want to know what is the great buzz, want to satisfy their curiosity... so they see whatever you give them and leave..... many people share the content in Facebook, Email, the URL, etc... then you are attracting more people that will stay longer...... are they all going to convert in the first visit, probably not, the first wave of traffic may not be the best (even I have data proving that sometimes people stay longer, this depends on many factors that I will explain later), you can get some emails, some adsense money, and some sales, but that is not the important part, the important part is the long term effect that this spikes have over your site, because Google start realizing something is going on on your site, people is getting by the thousands from social networks (just like it would happen in any viral effect), people keep comming, you create backlinks, traffic from several sources and they stay longer... over time you will get more Google traffic, I have tested and I will post the examples in a momment.

I read your post and I can clearly see that you have not understand the basic principle of content creation, this principle is: Give to the people something they find useful, funny, enjoyable, ti seems that you are just using Reddit to promote, yes reddit users are way more sofisticate than other, more tech savy, very skeptical and cynical, please read the specific rules of the sub reddit you are trying to intereact follow them and create content they enjoy, specifically content they can debate about.

It is as simple as I explained, the main problem is that people just want to go to REddit to spam, with bad content, without understanding the community rules, interactions or anything and yes, I have data backing up how reddit helps you on your SEO efforts, please read the above post where I am explaining the "viral effect".

Unfortunately sometimes you have to give the people what they need, not what they want to hear. Um, obviously people want to hear that life is rainbows and lollipops, but it isn't. There are tough choices, life-altering choices.

And let's not get into who understands content creation and who does not. An "article" with a couple bullet points is rather worthless.

Oh, and...of course I'm trying to promote my stuff. Duh! Did you enlighten the people to Reddit to have us simply waste our time surfing the countless, mostly-pointless threads on there all day?

I am not going to get here into a philosophical debate about what people really want or even worst trying to be me who will define what they need to hear, but I am going to point our that you are swimming in the wrong direction if you are trying to "enlight people with the truth" in your articles... if they are not going to your site and you are getting marked as spammer it is obviously that you are talking to the wrong crowd, you are breaking the number 1 rule of marketing: "A starving crowd".

I am saying (twice) that you are not understanding the rules of the sub reddit you are trying to market and that you are not marketing to the right crowd.

The example I gave about the content I use is an over simplification of what I do, it was just to ilustrate what I mean by a "pointing form article".

Originally Posted by PBMax View Post

You're on WF, dude. It's about marketing...
And who is critizing you about promoting your content? the problem seems to be that you are annoying the sub reddit you are "promoting", there is a difference between promoting and spamming, it is subtle but it seems that you have crossed already in the eyes of the subreddit you are trying to work with.

You need to have a more critical approach to your work, if you are not having the results you wanted is obvious that you are not doing it right, I am having some good traffic and I am sharing these with the fellow warriors.... I tried to give you some feedback on the things I believe you are doing wrong, and I am trying to point them our again, I think you are trying to convience the people on the sub reddit you are in... you want to fight them, and that will never get you any results, try to change the language you are using, controversy is better than attact.

I was just thinking about how to generate traffic from Reddit and similar social media websites. Thanks for posting this!

I imagine you can do the same thing with Tumblr. You could probably also get a lot of traffic from image database websites like IMGUR if you post a interesting picture and then a link to the article on your website... or a watermark....

Just something to think about. When people talk about social media they usually only think about Facebook but there are hundreds of social media sites that can bring in a lot of traffic if you know how to use them.

For those saying there is no SEO benefit on Reddit, and saying that the bounde rate is too hig, here is some proof, I should say this is a different site than the first one I post the data:

This site started on January the 17 and probably it had around 4 posts, I sent just one of them to Reddit, the sub reddit I sent this post is smaller than the one of my firs example, that is why I have less traffic, nevertheless I think that helps to make my point clearer.

On the numbers you can see how the 2 main sources of traffic are REddit and a little bit of Google (We are not taking into account either than the site was indexed super fast and start getting traffic from Google, nothing to brag about, but it was already recognized by Google).

Reddit still sends a bunch of traffic, high bounce rate, small time, etc...

In this second image we can see the data from February, the reddit traffic is way less than the first month and how Google starts sending more and more qualigy traffic, but that is not all.

In the 3 month, March is when the magic really kicks in, more than 3k visitors to a small blog and most from them from Google.

My conclusion here is that Reddit gives the right signals to Google about your site and that has SEO benefits.

I don't even know where to begin. Those images don't provide any type of proof of the SEO benefits of Reddit.... In order to show real cause and effect, you would have to provide a legitimate case study. That would included showing the actual keywords used to search, the change in rankings for keywords, exactly what you did in terms of link building etc. If Reddit was truly responsible for a boost in your keyword rankings, you would have seen a lot more growth in February, even if it was just keywords dancing around a bit. It's very evident that something else took place from January-March.

Your numbers show exactly what I was talking about. Look how quickly your site's traffic declined after the initial posting on Reddit. Reddit simply provides a quick boost to your traffic and it it goes away.

Anyways, if you believe Reddit works for you then stick with it. I could go far more in depth about this topic but it would require a lot of time lol. I have used Reddit before and gotten spikes in traffic but like I said, it doesn't last (just like the pics you posted show).

        I love it!!!!

I think that in a strict sense yes we would need everything you said, nevertheless here are my points:

        a) Why would the change would be in February and not in March? why just in February and not after?

        b) Why would I lie about doing something else on the site and not mentioned here? just to prove that Reddit works on SEO? I am not selling a WSO nor I am part of Reddit? What benefit does it bring me?

        c) If Reddit was not the cause of the increase on Google traffic so what was it?

As I said in the first post my goal with Reddit is to send the "viral signals" to Google, to send the social media signals, even the boost in traffic is great, that is not the main point of this strategy.

The idea with reddit is creating super quality backlinks, create discussion in the site, make people share the url via email, Facebook, Twitter, save it in their favorites etc... why building shitty links when you can create GREAT backlinks, traffic and more with this strategy?

If you have read the thread I have explained that the boost on traffic from Reddit it is great but that is not the main reason to use the site, anyway 10k visitors from REddit did not hurt my traffic, rankings, etc...

Like I said, do what works for you. I'm just saying that from my own testing and the experiences of many others, Reddit doesn't provide real long term benefits. Reddit is good for making things go Viral quick. Which is why I stated there is clearly something else involved with your change in Google search results. The effects of Viral content are typically very quick. I.E., a news story breaks about a new Video Game. When someone searches the name of that game, the results page will be flooded with sites on that specific topic. And this isn't necessarily just with News Topics.

The fact that you didn't see any changes until over a month later suggests that something else took place. I can't answer your question without more info. It's impossible to draw any type of conclusions as to why your site is getting more search traffic just by looking at a Google Analytics traffic report.

If you truly believe that a post on Reddit is responsible, more power to you. Keep doing it if it works for you.

When I talk about National Enquire headlines I am talking about headlines that grab your attention, 90% of your traffic battle in Reddit is win or lose in the headline.

      Some good headlines are:

      a) How Can This be Possible? 5 simple tricks to loose weight.

      b) Secret about weight loss your doctor doesn't want you to know.

      c) Are you eating these 10 foods that will make you gain weight no matter what diet you are on?

You are sharing your entire link on reddit, and there is here the traffic starts flowing, reddit it is not an article directory is a news feeder, people there share the content for other to make comments.

All 3 of those headlines would probably be flagged for spam on Reddit.

Especially the first one, unless there is such a thing as "loose weight" that I have never heard of

Reddit is awesome for traffic, (not even near Facebook though) but as soon as you start getting traffic from there by sharing your own content you will get ghosted - as in you think your submissions will be posted but no one else will see them.

As soon as I had my first big traffic day from Reddit, my account was ghosted and my domain was permanently flagged for spam.

Those guys are total d-bags over there and literally have nothing better to do than sit in their grandma's basement and mod their sub-reddit like they are soldiers.

(No offense to anyone reading this who lives in their grandma's basement )

So you have to game the system by having multiple accounts from multiple IPs submitting your content, but submitting other people's content much more.

I had one account my friend.

I shared a ton of other posts before I shared any of my own.

The mistake I made was having my account be the name of my website. Had I not done that it would have been harder.

Reddit is great for traffic, but run by d-bags.

And I don't understand how sharing your own content which people outside of reddit get a ton of value from is even considered spam.

I said for it to work you'd probably have to create multiple accounts . I didn't say I did that.

Irrelevant. You either get upvotes or downvotes. Yo got downvoted. Period. You can cry or whine all you want but it's very simple: it's their site and they have their rules (even to the sub level), if you don't like it you can try to game them (some succeed, others, like you, don't), run and control your own subs or move on. There is no need to insult others because you don't like their site's rules.

I'm not. I'm new here and I was having a great time until I found you insulting people for no other reason that they kicked you from their site. Childish and disgusting. I'll just ignore you from now on, but I will ask you something first: can I advertise my site to your audience for free? If not, does it make you a loser and a d-bag? By your own standards it does.

Hey look, my experience with Reddit over there was that the mods were d-bags. I'm sorry if you're son is one of them, but that's how I feel and I'm generally never like this or say anything like that.

However, with that said, and in Reddit's cases, that was my experience with them.

Even when I didn't know how to correctly use the system and asked mods questions politely and cordially, they were still d-bags.

That doesn't make me insulting. Am I not permitted to express my opinion anymore?

Of course my friend. I wasn't mad at all. That was just my experience with them.

My use of the word d-bag to describe them comes from a place of love and peace. Sincerely.

Its a great forum BECAUSE there are so little spammers.

The way you "game" the system, is by making awesome content that will get upvoted on its own, with your logo/URL watermarked in the bottom corner.

You need to make it a win/win.

Just posting a link to your sales page will just get you blacklisted.

I also use reddit and stumble upon. The thing with reddit and stumble upon is that its a lot of luck... personally I dont know of many people that frequently see these numbers. Not hating or anything but if you can show me you have done this over and over again then that's something...

Occasionally someone will get lucky and as with anything the more you post the more you increases your chances. Both reddit and stumble upon are designed to not give any one person all of the traffic. Also all of the traffic is browser traffic, not buyer traffic. You should be able to retain some of that traffic only if you have a good site with good content.

This is what many people that comments on this thread are not understanding, you are getting real visitors, from a very trusted and relevant site, this gives to Google the right signals, saying that your page is trusted and relevant to the content you are trying to rank, among other benefits.

It is not necessarily at all that you have many accounts, when your account is ghosted it means that you were sending links just from one domain and you were not interacting with the community, pay attention to those details.

Watermarking your content may help, but you wont get such a huge amount of traffic, what you need to do is to give them content they are interested about, a sales page, a squeeze page or an eCommerce page wont get any traffic and will get immediately blocked, follow the recommendations I made in the OP and you will be fine.

I have been experimenting with keyword-targeted traffic on Google (paying for people to use particular search terms and click through to my site from Google) and this is increasing my SERPs for those keywords, absolutely, and it is increasing the display rate of my site on other queries and increasing the amount of traffic Google sends me overall. Just a few months ago, I could not rank a page on this site above #200 on Google USA (after getting smashed by Panda), now I have about 90 keywords ranking above #50 and 30 ranking above #19 just from using this technique. So I see no reason why this kind of signal should not achieve something similar. Google is simply a machine at the end of the day, just a damn cleverly programmed one. Rage against the machine! You hit the nail!!! that is the key, you need to be a member of the community first and after that you are going to push your content, not many people understand this and they just spam their content, here is where all the bans, ghosting and problems start.

I know what looks like spam, thank you very much. Posting on Reddit is a whole different beast than other forms of marketing as users can upvote/downvote your article. If it looks like spam, guess what, it's going to be downvoted or removed by a mod.

          P.S. What is a "sideo"?

Sideo is a typo for side. and well I guess the headlines are not spam because I have generated 60k plus visitors, so how can you criticize the post I wrote without evidence? where are your results? how much traffic are you pushing?

You would think that but I was interacting heavily, voting and commenting on many posts in the subreddits I was marketing in.

I also was sharing urls from 5 or 6 different sites in addition to my own and the ratio of shares of other sites to share of my own was 2 or 3 to 1.

I think the mistake I made right from the get go bc I didn't get the whole process was sharing my own link first and having my profile name being the same as my domain name.

This got me on their radar right from the start.

the issues for reddit is that over 50% of its users are 18-24 - which is poorest converting segment online unless its a tech gadget. FB & Pinterest are far better converters to sales because its more mature audience (who have money and are just looking for inspiration to buy).

Many ppl know about Reddit, I just don't think they capitalize on it though. You have to find the right subreddits to submit too, most ppl mark your site as spam if its not a popular site its a few problems but well worth it. Most I've got is 5000 visitors in one day.

I don't know if this particular method works or not, but I might give it a try. I can tell you definitely that traffic begets traffic. It's like money, when you don't need it everyone wants you to have it. Thanks OP!

    Thanks for the tip!

Posting stuff on reddit for the off-chance of getting a traffic spike is not new, but it's nice to have a reminder every now and then.

Reddit is growing, and users are spreading more to the sub-reddits (there's one for everything nowadays). I've even seen effectiveness on imgur descriptions links, that's 2 actions away, and users show they'll work if the content is good (two clicks is like slavery on the internet).

These are full of pre-filtered traffic looking for info in your niche, so it would be dumb to not try.

I'll start applying this and will report when/if anything worthwhile happens.

For those who are saying this is juts one hit wonder, that ir can be repeated, this is another site where I "seed" it on reddit, I post another two on the threads, and I want you to see the bounce rate as well, for those who are saying that because of the bounce rate there is no quality traffic on reddit, the quality of the traffic depends on the sub reddit you post your content in.

just join related groups to what you are going to share
remove the link from the description after it creates a image description and title link their

Although this is an old thread it deserves a bump. I can confirm that this will work SEO-wise. Social traffic in itself will not bring you sales, but if you keep it up continuously for a month or two you'll attract Google's SEO love. I've been first hand witness to great financial merits achieved this way. Rest assured that Google's love is worth lots of money.

I only wish there was a bit more detail about strategies how to successfully avoid mods and get links and content published.

One question, in order to your domain being blacklisted, would it help if you posted .php redirect or shortened URLs (like TinyUrl).

    Start working on reddit
this is great but is the traffic quality since from the pics you showed, they aren't really staying on the page?

Best way to make Reddit work is to actually be active in it. For every 2 posts you put out to your site, put out 8 more to other sites. Don't do it to quickly, up vote other peoples links, post comments... get involved. Is it worth all the time and effort? Depends lol

This depends a lot on the subreddit, but roughly I have calculated that each vote is equal to 100 visitors, what I do is create the content on my site and then drop it in the sub reddit that better fits my content example: if it is something about how to make money I may post it on r/entrepreneur it if it is something about dating it may be in r/seduction etc...

The ghosting process happends when your user is just submiting the same site and it is not interacting at all, that is why it is so important to really interact with the comunity in order to avoid been seen as spammer

No, a squeeze page is a big no, no, think about it, what does a squeeze page have to do in a newspaper? you need to think in reddit as a place where you are going to post "news", "Stories", that is the key, you need to approach it more like a Public Relationship excercise, that is why so many people is failling because there the marketing is not direct, it is way more subtle, you have to give them the 2 + 2 so they can come up with the answer, and all of them scream 4!!!

Originally Posted by aureldan View Post

They are not, if you are extremely skillful you may insert your keyword on the title of your post, that will work as the anchor text, BUT the most iumportant part here is:

      a) The traffic you are getting from the site.

      b) If you create an enticing title, you may create a serious discussion on the page bringing several comments and creating a high PR page and removing the "no follow" attribute they put on the new pages.

I also thought to include the keywords in title and in the text. However, I see that the traffic depends on the subreddit. Two days ago I posted a link in "history", but...still waiting. I understand that it's necessary to comment, to be active on the site, but I see that there are subreddits where less visited.

Now, I want to search a classification of the subreddits!

Reddit is fantastic if used properly, and surprisingly I am usually the only one who mentions it on some other forums.

Problem with lot of people is that they expect they can just join and post their links straight away, just like that. People love good content but they are allergic to anything which might appear as spam - solving this "problem" is a key for making any use of Reddit.
