Do you really need a separate blog to advertise? Can't you just use facebook to post what you want to say?

  • The level of details in this post is too damn high - just kiddin'.

    But seriously, giving more details about your business and desired outcome of said advertisement won't hurt. Both means offer free and paid traffic in various ways; the ROI will also differ from one to another, as well as the time put into it.

    It all depends on what you want to achieve, your skills and other various factors; it's not just a question of "which" or "why".

  • Why not both? It's only a copy and paste. A summary of your article you could post on facebook, and for more information you could redirect to your blog.

    Why facebook? To get some additional traffic. What yoh post on facebook is limited to people you have as friends.

    Why blog? Everyone has access to it.

    It depends what you want to achieve and what your goals are.

  • Both can be utilized for promoting, definitely but it also depends on your market or targeted area. I believe that blogs are friendlier to the eye than a lot of facebook posts or messages but I suppose that is my personal preference
  • One thing to keep in mind about Facebook is that you do not own it. If you get your account shutdown, or Facebook changes the rules, all the great stuff you have posted will be lost.

    • EXACTLY! It does happen. Facebook shot down a hunting page with more than 300,000 fans. The guy did most of his business there. Facebook put him out of business with a single click. Not pretty.

      I always recommend that you publish your content on your website / blog and use syndication tools like TwitterFreed to push your content out to your social media profiles. ALWAYS publish on sites you own and then syndicate out so that you can pull traffic off of other site and social media platforms. Syndication tools post an excerpt from your article onto your social sites and include a link to read more. Readers on those sites can click your link and follow it back to your blog where they can see all the details and your offers.

      Doing it this way prevents getting shut down. Also... you do NOT want to include prominently on your home page any social media buttons that take people from your site to your Facebook because they already have a billion + active users, they don't need your traffic, too. I see this one mistake killing conversions like crazy.

    • Ya, I am totally agree with this. So just use both (blog and Facebook) in your marketing strategy. Post your content in blog and share it in Facebook. So that the visitors will know about blog and about yourself. Also you can earn money later by using your blog from google.
  • I only have need for one site to drive traffic. I was thinking facebook since it's a good way to get likes, and create new business friends at the same time. More people are familiar with the facebook platform than any other. Why not just focus on one? Most people don't even know what a blog is. What say ye?

    • Your Facebook business page is NOT a site. You don't own it. You don't control it. Competitors or anyone can flag your posts and get you shut down and there's nothing you can do about it. It doesn't matter that people don't know what a BLOG is. Many folks use Wordpress as a CMS (content management system) for creating their website. You can turn on / off the blog functionality if you like. Make your website look anyway you want and focus on driving traffic to it, not your social profiles. Use your social profiles to pull traffic to your site.

    I think it depends on what your goals are as well as how your business infrastructure is set up. I think if you have a business and no website and you are having success promoting your business on Facebook, that’s probably all you need. If you do have a website and you have a method of converting people there or for whatever reason want to drive traffic there, I think having a blog is a good move.

  • Its best to have a blog also,there your collected knowledge are posted,and should be easy to find. A blog are owned by you if you have a wordpressblog with your own hosting, and you can get great search engine rankings.That way a large amount of people can notice you and your blog. A blogpost is usually pretty long,would be hard to share as good the similar content on facebook

    OP: a friend of mine... did ALL his business on Facebook, using Facebook ads to drive traffic to his many fan pages which had tons of fans. He was making over $20,000 a month. Guess what? Facebook killed his business... so its crucial to have a platform you OWN that you use to communicate with your customers, readers, etc.

    Facebook, etc, are all secondary.

  • I'm in agreeance with an early comment, why not both? There are a few tools that let you auto update and cross reference, so when you update one the other is updated as well. I would consider which is more beneficial for what you're trying to do...social media platforms are great for interaction, blogs are moreso great for informative updates (interaction may not be so encouraged).

    So I'd say start there. What do you want to be done with your info, if anything.
  • I would make my primary model using a BLOG. You dont own facebook nor your account. They can shut you down for any reason, so its in your best interest to have a separate and MAIN blog that you should do the bulk of your marketing on.

    (Some marketers have a tendency to be lazy.... hopefully this doesn't describe you! )

  • You can, but you're missing the power of your own domain name. What do you do if you rely completely on Facebook and they decide to ban you? Not likely, but you never know. You need to use your blog and Facebook together if you want full marketing power.

  • As for a blog, you can optimize it to rank on search engines, getting free, passive, permanent traffic. You can't do that with FB. FB is like an active source of traffic, not passive.

  • Like others have said, use a blog - if you go for a wordpress one and buy your own domain/hosting you'll own it unlike a facebook page that can be shut down whenever they feel like it.

    You can easily share blog posts on social networks in a few minutes!

So blog first then setup a Facebook page and post your blog content on Facebook.

  • blog and facebook both are different social media platforms. we can manage our own blog but we are the users of facebook. in blog we can share, comment and like also but not build online community like chatting, group....

    I am just grateful, I learned how to blog before I got into social networking such as facebook marketing as my strategy to promote my business and my products.
  • A blog is also more friendly to look at - you can write longer articles and have people explore the other parts of your blog - it has a certain organization to it. With Facebook the layout is limited and people don't have access to all the topics and once, they have to scroll around to find out more and that doesn't necessarily hold their attention. A blog gives you more authority too - the owner of a website - it gives the idea of you being someone with something valuable to offer

  • Summaries and tid bits can go on the FB page. You have a lot of good advice here before my post. I'd just like to add that Social media is meant to be social. People get a bit pissy if you are throwing ads in their face all the time. Use it as a lure ..entice them to get on your list...get to the know like and trust..then sell the heck out of them

    • I got away from using Blogger for a new system at IMGlobal and have always used Facebook.

      I can easily say...blogging is important outside of Facebook.

      Definitely do both.

      Blogging is great for organic traffic that helps build credibility.

    • Facebook and it's not even close. Blog is a time-suck (CSS, HTML, formatting articles, etc.) and it is very hard to get traffic to it via SEO. Plu attention spans are tiny online nowadays, which is perfect for social media.

      I wasted a year of my life trying to build a blog. I switched to affiliate marketing via FB and never looked back. I make WAY more via FB than I did through blogging/SEO. FB is much more efficient because the technical stuff is not necessary - you can set up a page and start posting in a matter of minutes (try doing that with a blog). It's all about posting shareworthy content and interspersing the posts with affiliate marketing posts.

  • Having a website as well as a facebook page has hundreds of advantages. There is a limit to what you can do on a facebook page, and how it looks and feels. Offers convert a lot better on your website. Plus, you have a better chance of them signing up to your list.
  • Sure you can say what you want on Facebook - but what if you say is valuable and enough people are interested to hear you say those things often. If that happens, then shouldn't you be able to monetize your audience so you can become financially self-sufficient and provide even better things to hear? If that's the case, then FB won't allow you to monetize it - a blog would.

  • It is always better if you have control over your marketing and promotion. Facebook is a good place to advertise but like what others already said here, you do not own Facebook and there are factors that may occur, which you cannot have any control of. So to avoid these things, better have your own website.

  • A Blog will give you authority and image which is quite important in business. its almost the same reason why you would want to use your domain on your email rather than just use the free email services like yahoo or gmail. In marketing Image is almost everything.
  • A blog is not necessary but in the long way a good tool to promote your business/ service and products because:
    1. you own your content no risk of changing policies by Facebook
    2. more space to embed more detailed content.
    3. you can create higher position in SEO
    4. blogging improves your writing habit
    5. blogging also brings you a lot of knowledge which you can use for your business

    • That's true. If you can, your blog should be the central or base point of your business. Then all the other platforms such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter etc. become your sources of traffic.

      Much more stable in the long-term as you own everything and if anything goes wrong with any of the traffic source, you can always add or replace with other sources.

  • Blog is the only way to reach a large number of users through your organic content writing skills. If you don't have good writers than look for good writers.

    Can't you just use facebook to post what you want to say?
    Is it not the main purpose of Facebook?


    In other words: Put your offer on Facebook but direct your fans to your web site.

  • You should only use a WordPress.org blog and not Blogger or WordPress.com. You can do anything you like with a .org site. They are the best. You can get an unlimited number of plugins and this gives you unlimited potential.

    As the people above said, you need to use both Facebook and your blog. You can put stuff on your blog that you can't put on Facebook. You can customise your blog to look however you want and Facebook is great for getting the word out so that your blog gets heard virally and not just from your efforts.

  • Maybe it's just my old way of thinking, but I'd never have just a Facebook page for advertising; too much could go wrong that's out of your control. I totally agree with the folks here. Have your blog as the main location and use social media as tools.

  • Blog for long-term. If you're up for some quick "viral" traffic, go Facebook.

    But I'm a bit biased with hosting a blog within your website. It not only helps your whole site rank better, you also essentially "filter" your prospects. Only people who are interested in what you write will visit your blog the second time. But post stuff that's interesting and helpful enough and they'll be coming back to your blog (and therefore your site) often. That's recurring, targeted traffic and that makes money in the long run.

    It actually depends on the nature of your business. I mean if it's a regular pizza store then boosting on your social media presence is more important than setting up a blog, otherwise opting for a blog is imminent.
  • Did anyone mention the trust factor you have with Facebook verses a blog? Sure you don't have control over what happens with content but you could get the visitors to the FB pages and then slowly move them off FB to your blog and onto a list?

    We must have our blog besides FaceBook.

    I prefer to create my own blog instead of FaceBook.
    Because I feel FaceBook is an added flavor for my blog.
    FaceBook only helps in order to direct the new visitors to my blog.

    I also feel spamming too much on social sites is also not fair.

    But when it comes to FaceBook, it is a wonderful platform to interact with our blog visitors than a Blog.
