Is Facebook necessary?

I wouldn't say you're dependent on having a FaceBook page, but you should look at it as a useful source for traffic generation. I wouldn't ever depend on it because I wouldn't be surprised if they stepped in one day and started making people pay for posting links, but for right now it is a good source for targeted traffic.

True. No matter how dumb you think about Facebook, you could still find possible clients/customers there. I think there's no limit when we talk about ads. We should reach out to all kinds of people.

Nothing is necessary when you think about it.

A life vest on a boat is not necessary.
A helmet for a motorcycle rider is not necessary.
A parachute in a plane is not necessary.

None of those things are necessary just like Facebook is not. Hover just like Facebook all those things are a good idea

Unnecessary.

I drive traffic from FB daily and haven't spent a dime out of pocket to do it.

My FB marketing is done through my profile and I haven't had a lead or customer mind in a year so no, a Fan Page isn't necessary unless you want to run paid traffic.

According to me facebook is one of the best way to generate traffic to your websites and I say this of personal experience, I have a funny page with 301k likes, I created a website for it , put some jokes, funny pics , vidz and here I go, I am earning around 300$ from it and its been 3 months only , another page related to fashion , I created a blogspot blog and got so much response that I shifted to paid hosting , custom domain and premium stuff and I had earned 100+$ in amazon affiliate commissions.
And the point here is that I am getting 90% of my traffic from facebook , from my pages.

If you're going to do FB, then I'd advise setting up a Fanpage. It's still worth it, especially in doing Newsfeed ads and building your likes just by advertising through your fanpage.

You can still build a list through Fanpages and funnel people to your external website, so definitely still worth it.

My take is - It is necessary - If someone likes your blog post or your service on your web page, there are two options to express liking - social media like or commenting ( for which FB) is an option and commeting on the web page.

Both are good idea but people prefer commenting on FB easier, so that way it helps your post popularize for free.

You're not supposed to duplicate your content on Facebook. And if you feel like you have to "dumb down" your content to get more traffic, maybe your targeting the wrong demographic.

Facebook is very necessary and compulsory to have in your overall traffic generation plan. I do not think facebook is going to start charging for posting links because they already making a lot from ads and also their new feature of booting post etc. Doing such a thing will cause a lot of people to reconsider using Facebook and that will leave the possibility of another company coming up to fill that spot. Facebook wouldn't do such a thing. Facebook is a sure way of getting targeted traffic to your websites and offers. It cannot be ignore as Facebook is the biggest social media network on planet earth. ignoring it would be a very bad business decision..

According to me, It's not. If you do have ability to generate traffic from other places you have no need to make a Facebook page. I have created an fb page just to fill the social icons on my website. Other wise there is not any necessity.

Facebook a social networking site who have maximum traffic among all, and facebook page and sharing with facebook is good to get traffic to site. Its all about how to use it to get traffic otherwise its just formality because there are many pages on facebook.

Perspective is everything and it depends on what your business model is. What most of the posters are saying is correct, in a sense. That being said, there are a number of traffic sources that we all ignore. Can it bring buyers to your offers or is there another more targeted way to do so?

You are asking a really smart question, ACE24. Just because a social media tool exists doesn’t mean that you need to use it. Facebook can work well for B2B. But you are concerned about resources, which I translate to: We want to do it right but don’t have the manpower to do that. The added opportunity may not be worth the time investment for Facebook for your business.
I’d advise you to keep looking at Facebook. See what your competitors and peers are doing there. Collect a list of links to their Facebook pages, make a note of things you see them do that you consider to be smart. These things will help you if you decide in the future to include Facebook.

As per my opinion having business pages or business accounts on Social Media websites like Twitter, Face-Book, Google+ etc.... is important but it is more important to be regular there and share relevant posts, images and information.
