Hashtags (#) are still a new tool, so don’t be afraid to experiment. You can offer discounts, create contests, or broadcast curated streams. It’s important to pick a hashtag (#) that’s not currently being used or that can have many different audiences. The hashtag (#) will not only be a way to get attendees to engage with the event, but to get attendees to engage with each other.

Facebook and Twitter are two very different platforms and therefore use different approaches in engaging users. So you have to keep in mind how your users will engage in the content and what will make them want to engage. Facebook is NOT twitter and vice versa.

No, I don't use tags to promote stuff on facebook. On twitter, yes, but not on facebook.

Don't know about you, Windrider, but it seems to me that this percentage would be virtually identical to the number of people who #use #them #excessively.

I think it's important to remember the purpose of the hashtag, regardless of social network: to connect individual posts to bigger conversations. That's the line that connects the dots between hash tags and SEO: relevance. When you're using hashtags that tons of people are using, you're talking about (and producing content about) topics tons of people care about. Seems to me like relevant posts on hashtagged topics would increase your site's freshness scores-- after all, you're posting relevant, current content.

Hashtags are a tool to draw people into big conversations across the boundaries of individual social networks, which means you can multiply the value of your social media marketing by using hashtags on a regular basis. Reminds me of a post that my company wrote not too long ago. That line about combining conversations into a single thread is a good metaphor, I think. With hashtags, we have the opportunity to sprinkle our brands into viral conversations.

There it is! The perfect one-liner that explains the purpose of the hashtag. I've heard and read so many long and meandering answers. But this one takes the cake.

      I'm going to steal it.

I know if you use the hashtag then even people who are not friends with you (or liking the page) can see your post if they search for the hashtag, just like with Twitter. Not too many people seem to use the hashtag on FB but I can say I've gotten a few likes from using it in the past.

I like the fact that Facebook has implemented the use of hashtags but I don't get it when people starting to put hashtags in all their posts, even those nonsense ones.

I've thrown some relevant to my niche hashtags out there in posts, but I don't see the benefit other than putting clickable hastags in there.

I think the idea is for people to be able to find your posts through open graph, however I have yet to see it all unfold that way.

      Can you even measure that?

Is there something on Facebook that tells you xxx traffic came from any particular hashtag?

I agree Jason. I use them in hopes that I might get some traffic but don't ever count it! Hashtags are still new to facebook and when I ask my friends if they know what hashtags are they simply say I have no idea.

Right now there is no way of telling where your traffic is coming from on Facebook. Just that it is coming from Facebook.

It will be very interesting to see how marketers start utilizing hashtags on facebook. I saw Biz Stone (the founder of twitter) give a talk and he said that when he first heard the idea of hashtags he thought it was "kind of dorky." But his thesis for why it's become so widespread is that it's a very simple way to categorize your tweets (or status updates). It's so easy to use hashtags both in your posts and when searching for other people's posts. I think there's a LOT of potential there.

Our team uses the hashtag a lot, but I'd be honest here and say we aren't finding too many people searching the tags on Facebook like they do twitter. So while the tag is there, is anyone clicking on it and reading other "like topic" posts? I don't see it yet. It is new though.

I have clicked on the hashtags out of curiosity to see what others are posting. I have also searched hashtags in the search box. They both work but you can tell that not very many people use them. (except the marketers and promotions.)

Yea it doesn't look like it's widely used yet. So much going on with faceb, seems like people aren't clicking to read more on a topic yet. I do like that it's added to faceb though! Tw and IG have it so may as well
