Can selling an ebook get you a publishing deal?

Traditionally it can be quite hard to get a publishing deal if you are an unknown so do you think that if you are selling your book on kindle it will improve your chances in getting a publishing deal because you can prove a track record.

Has anyone gotten a publishing deal after self publishing..

Thoughts please.

    I managed to get a publisher to take on my ebook. I wasn't selling it on Kindle - just as a pdf from my website. I wrote to them on the off chance that they might be interested and they got back to me within a week to say they'd love to publish it as an ebook. Maybe the fact the book was already written was a plus as they could read the whole thing. Plus I was aiming the book at micro businesses and the publisher was looking for authors who targeted that market.

    It would be interesting to hear other opinions and experiences.
