How to start off with Twitter?

Hi Warriors,

Am about to start a Twitter account and wondering what is the best way to go at it.
I don't have any experience in Twitter. If you know of any good books that tell about great strategies I'd love to hear from them.

Do you have suggestions? I'd love to hear them!

I do the same thing. Following people in your niches is a great idea. I like to organize them into lists as well so that I can easily access particular kinds of content if I choose too.

Literally just posted this in a similar topic, hope it helps:

Twitter has been really hit and miss for me in the past few years, but I've put together some stuff I've seen work (and not work) for me.

The Right Things to do on Twitter:
    • Replying to peoples comments in your niche always help get "@replys" and can get you noticed more.
    • Have a good twitter profile! At least having a good icon and color scheme is a start, but make a bio thats well thought out and will make people want to follow you.
    • Not every tweet you post should have a link! Even though you see some people that only post links and have huge amounts of followers, this never ends up too well.
    • Post more than just links to your website (if thats what your going for) Make helpful comments to users your following and even post links to other sites that you like.
    • Talk about more than just you niche! Don't get too far off topic, but its okay to branch out a little. Post your comments regarding the holidays, famous birthdays, etc.
    • Find a balance with the number of updates to post per day. Way too many tweets per day is enough to unfollow, but if you never post anything, people don't want to follow you either. As little as 3 and up to 20 a day is a pretty good limit.
    • Try searching for products/ news in your niche in the search box. Use the info you get to post tweets that are most relevant to others tweets, thus, when other people search for similar topics, your tweets will come up.
    • Use the new "Lists" feature to your advantage... create lists an encourage people to want to be on those lists by offering incentives (coupons, discounts, special content, etc.)
    • Keep your following to follower ratio to 1.5 to 1 at most times. When your just start, its okay to add 15 people and have no followers. Start applying this rule once you get around 60 followers.
    • Let your followers know when your going to be gone. Alerting them of going on vacation, out of town, etc. is a pretty good way to make sure you don't have 0 followers when you return home.
    • Follow some people you know are never going to follow you back. Adding celebrities, businesses, etc. that have a lot of followers always look good even if they never end up following you back.
    • Although your twitter account might represent your business, everyone knows there's a human on the other side - be personable!
    • Automated posting have become popular lately - while this is effective to keep constantly tweeting, don't overdo it. Be a human first, a bot second.

The Wrong Things to do on Twitter:
    • Don't send (or autosend) direct messages to people thanking them for there follow and informing them your following them back. This is extremely dumb and annoying and makes users want to unfollow you almost right away (especially if you put a link in the DM!)
    • Don't neglect your account! Most people on twitter look to each and every one of there followers to supply them with something. And if you haven't posted any update in 2 weeks, it gives them a reason to unfollow you.
    • Having a stagnant profile can get people used to what they expect from you, and often this gets boring. Customize your background and colors once a month or two is usually sufficient to keep your followers satisfied and not bored.
    • Don't use colors that are hard to read! Any light color won't show up in the "white" middle part of your twitter page, and this is a complete turn-off.
    • Don't change your icon if you have lots of followers! Users rely on a quick glance to see there updates, and if you change your icon dramatically, though it still says your name, they don't make the same connection in there mind.
    • Don't mix up the format of your tweets. People come to expect what they will look like (ie. Title [LINK] Description) and changing them around makes your followers question you.
    • Don't post ads more than once a day if you use a twitter advertising service. Sites like RevTwt can make a small sum with sponsored tweets, but if your ad-to-real tweet ratio isn't near 1:10 your going to lose some followers.
    • Don't post worthless babble. Twitter is great resource for traffic if you take the time and effort to make each tweet something useful (and that doesn't mean it has to include a link!)
    • Don't draw attention to your profile with abnormal follow/unfollow patterns. Even if you use software to do this, be cautious and use sparingly so that no red flags are raised.

Again, just some of my personal views on using twitter effectively. Cheers!

Lists are certainly going to help you segment users for engagement. If you want to engage with authorities on Twitter, tweet their content, they'll notice. Create a list for these 'power users' to engage them at a later date once a relationship has been built.

As mentioned, Twitter can drive a ton of traffic. If you engage targeted users you can even drive lower funnel traffic and increase your efficiency (and affiliate sales ).

    Hello Tijs
First you started to follow the peoples in the twitter account. After that you can tweet. Remember 1 thing when you are going to tweet just put your website url in the tweet box.. You can add image in the tweet box.

My reccomendation is to build your Twitter page. Put a lot of work into it and make it look nice. Then start to follow a bunch of people in your niche. Some of them will follow you back. Also interact and engage the followers.

It depends upon your purpose of setting up that Twitter account. But you can always start by following a lot of users. Just avoid asking them to follow you back because most people just get pissed off when you do this. Update it regularly and always be consistent if it’s for a niche.

You need to be careful when following a lot of accounts because that can get your account deleted very quickly which can lead to wasted time on your behalf. Following is very important, but must be done carefully and at a slower rate.

The best experiences I have had so far include searching for your keyword target (with Twitter's search tool) with -http included in the search phrase. Let's say your keyword is marketing...you would type the following:

    "-http marketing"

...and then this filters out most links, which are generally spam anyways. What you are left with is a list of tweets that are relevant and engaging to your market. You will still need to filter through, but not as much.

The key here is to engage with those that are using the keyword that you are looking to build an account around. Start replying to these people and if you are relevant/helping them out then chances are that they will follow you therefor you won't get busted for following too many accounts.

I haven't had any trouble with replying to other people that are not following me and this is the most engaging and best way that I have tried so far. This can be somewhat more time consuming, but it builds value and trust in what you are as a brand.

You should start by following people who you think would be interested in your tweets and they may well follow back.

Re-tweeting and interacting with other people is a good way to get noticed.

Putting out interesting tweets is obviously one of the most important things to do.

Make sure you advertise your twitter profile around as much as you can. In forums like this for example you can have it in the little social networking box or in forums that don't have a feature like that, you could put a link in your signature.

Great list, ItWasLuck3! I can certainly make use of some of them in the future. Basically, almost everything that you need to know is already there. My favorite one is, “Don't change your icon if you have lots of followers!” – something that is very true but is an act that is often neglected.

There are many other things that can be done in twitter like finding and adding friends on Twitter is pretty easy. Once you've set up your account, just go to the invite page to connect with your webmail services to invite friends or find the ones who are already on Twitter.

I always went to a page similar to my own and started adding their followers. Chances are, they'll be interested in my page, too. Just make sure to have quality content posted to your page before you do.
Since Twitter has a certain follower/following ratio you must abide by, find a twitter api that shows your who you're following that isn't following you. Give the user 2-3 days to start following you before you go through and unfollow everyone who hasn't followed you back. Rinse and repeat.
I don't know how you'd feel, but it may add to the legitimacy of your page if you bought the first 1,000 likes or so, and went after more organic, real likes after that. I just think people will give your page more credit if it has more followers. Just a thought.

This is the way to do it. There are also services that you can use that will take care of this process for you. Tweet Adder used to be great, but has gone downhill since they got sued.

Twiz (twiz.co) is a service I have just started using, they will add relevant followers for you, from accounts that you choose. Pretty cheap too, though you can't use it to automate posts.

What exactly is your intention for starting with twitter ? To make lots of friends and followers ? To generate lots of leads for sale purposes ?
I made a post somewhere tonight about how to find leads on customers and so checkout my other posts. Do a search on my Username and read all my posts. Can't be repeating the techniques here or I will get branded as a spammer.

    Thanks

    Hi,

If you are still starting out, the very first thing you would want to do is to pimp your profile. Establish a good-looking Twitter profile to encourage people to follow you. Having a great background, profile pic and bio (that are of course, connected to your niche) would do so much wonder.

The next thing is to look for your target market by making use of HASHTAGS. With the use of hashtags, you could easily find people that are interested in your niche. Follow this people and tweet to them.

Throw some promotional marketing strategies through Twitter. For sure, this will capture the hearts of Twitter users and would follow you (if they are interested with your offer and niche).
