So, let's get an overview of all the diffrent approaches people take here when it comes to driving traffic.

Though we probably all do generally the same things, what is the FIRST method you use to start generating some traffic after you have launched a new website?

    In general I create a fan page and start to post interesting news stories in the niche.

      And, then promoting the fan page on other related Facebook pages helps to get people's attention.

    Social bookmarking and press release distribution generally. Throw in some document shares too.

    Did you mean to drive traffic from social media or from anywhere? If it is from social media then nicelife is right. But if from any source than I would suggest to drop the site in all the search engines. create an xml sitemap and submit to as many search engines as you can.

    How about paid ads? Been reading a lot lately that paid advertising rather than trying to rank on google is the way to go.
