Should I "Like" other businesses

Hi guys, trying to build my Facebook likes and SMS subscription list (going to be offering sms coupons to use in local outlets). Was wondering, is it a good idea to Like other businesses, e.g. restaurants, take away etc. That I will be potentially have as clients to send their sms coupons to my subscription list. And maybe share some of their posts, so I can be seen getting involved locally?

There is no reason not to like a business that is relevant to you.
Its a good idea, especially if the page you've liked has 5k+ followers, you are bound to get some traffic.

    It can't hurt

I agree with others here; Like them if they are relevant for your page.

I often meet clients that are caught in the old way of thinking and that don't want to like other businesses because they feel it's a way of promoting their competitors. It's not always easy to convince old, traditional marketing people about this, but to this date I still haven't seen any negative sides of liking others (as long as they are relevant for your own page).

Liking them does not mean that you will get likes in return. Some of them will be so kind to do it, but not everyone.

It is a good idea, but do not expect something in return as you might only get disappointed. The best way to do it is to send a PM to each of these businesses, too, informing them that you gave their business a thumbs up + asking if you can get one in return...

Even if you don't get a like back, it's useful for a number of reasons. You can see how they interact with their customers, as well as see what types of information they share with others. Also, if it's a business that you deal with directly, the information they share could be directly applicable to you. Try to think of it as an opportunity to learn first and foremost.

Like their business page as long as it is not your competitor but somehow related to the your services.

I always prefer to like relative pages, although it won't give you any super benefit, you can't be sure if they will like you back but if they do then you can get good exposure and promotion.

  • Liking businesses you genuinely like and business that support can do no harm. They might even like you back and you can get ideas on how they market on Facebook.
