How to handle my own url's in Facebook and Pinterest?

I had a couple questions, all having to do with using url's in Facebook and Pinterest.

If I post something at Pinterest and try to link it to my Facebook fan page, it won't do it. How should I handle that url?

I see a lot of people using a url shortener for their url of their website, in Facebook and sometimes Pinterest.

What is the downside to doing that, or is that the best way to go? I would think a direct link would be better seo wise, but I need some feed back please.

Thanks.

There is easy way to connect your pinterest profile with facebook using settings, and your pins will automatically be posted on your fb page
I don't much about facebook but i have seen that URL shortners are often reported at pinterest and they are taken down or blocked quite frequently

      Thanks for your comments.

I just want to pin in specific boards to be able to reference a fanpage. So I am thinking I will have to make an image and put the url of a website page and forward that page to facebook fanpage. Anyone have experience with that?

I think this is probably your best bet. URL shorteners come and go and when they go, they take your links with them so I think better to use the real URL's. I don't know if you are on Wordpress with your site, but if you are, i use a plugin called quick page.post redirect. Its pretty simple to set up and use, which I really like. :-)

Thanks for the suggestion Michael. I do use wordpress and I was going to use prettylink, so that I can track whether anyone is clicking through. It will forward to a different url as well.

And if someone has some info to share on what is best url methods to use on a facebook fan page. I see people using the real url and some using a url shortener. (Personally, I don't like to use url shorteners).
