Twitter not worth the time?

by Dain

I've always gone back and forth with twitter.

I've found there seem to be A TON of inactive or fake accounts.

And if people are tweeting... a lot of the time it's automated by software.

I've personally found to consume more time than worth the the effort or ROI.

Anyone had a good experience? Can anyone win me over on this with a success story?

You need to build an audience and get into conversations with people, this way they are more likely to click through to any links you post, also tells you there not fake accounts.

If it's not yielding you results you should try to automate it through applications such as Hootsuite / Onlywire, so you don't "waste" time specifically posting to/for Twitter, and use twitter marketing software or services to free up your time, instead of grinding trying to get a few followers or Rts a day.

Since Twitter is ubiquitous you can also do a simple Google search of your local area + niche and go to their websites. 90% of the time a businss will list its Twitter account. You can follow them and engage with them if you want to take the manual approach, knowing you aren't just wasting your time on dead accounts.

Twitter is a waste of time. 160 character isn't enough for a campaign.

What other social networks are you guys using?

Twitter doesn't seem to work well for me either. Facebook, not so much either. I don't get any interaction at all on Facebook but on Twitter I do still get a bit, with people favouriting and retweeting my tweets.

Your not limited to 160 characters on your campaign. Your limited to 160 characters on a single update. If you expect that your going to get twitter traffic from just posting spam, links, advertisements as your tweets your going to get nothing but disappointment. Twitter, Faceook, G+ etc are all about interacting with your potential customers. Not spamming them.

Saw some articles on news sites about this the other day. FB and Twitter have so many millions of accounts that are fake. Is it really any surprise? Now, are they worth using? Of course but only if used properly and they should definitely not be something you place all your eggs into.

#1: That's the strength of Twitter, the three things you mention doesn't matter. That's because people only see messages of people they want to follow. So use it as a "quick news update" for the people that want to follow you.

#2: Try pull marketing in stead of push marketing for Twitter. Like if someone tweets "person: help, i have a flat tire" answer "@person where are you exactly?, we can come in 30 minutes to help you".

#3: Try to get into a discussion when something related to your product is trending. Always respond to multiple persons, don't forget the @.

#4: If people have questions about your product, you want them to ask them publicly on Twitter instead of sending you an email. So guide your website visitors to Twitter for their questions. Remember all the friends of that person will see the conversation as well. Because of the conversion it will become a top post that appear on top of the other results.

Twitter is just spammed to death.

The people usually just write there own message in there, but don´t read...

Part of the problem are social media bots and follow exchanges.

Hmmm. So it seems everyone is saying not worth the time.

The main strategy should be for back links and have it all automated.

    Engage elsewhere.

Which is what I came to the conclusion of a while ago.

    Hi Everyone! :-)

Most contacts I've engaged with on Twitter has only suggested we make connections on FB or LinkedIn. Back in the day, I can recall when my Myspace buddies stop engaging and started requesting their buddies to follow them on the more active medias. Looks like Twitter's prognosis is quite gloomy. Well, that's my two cents...

I have to tell you that I spend way too much time trying to market on Twitter. It's a time sink and has been exactly worthless for my needs. But, if you are going to have a go, get TweetSpice and follow the manual advice. It WILL get you actual users in volume..for what good it will do you.

The problem I see with Twit, FB, and G+ is that everybody posts but nobody reads. As in the dead world of SEO, the only time your stuff is read or perhaps acted on is if someone is actually looking for it. Otherwise it is so much scrolling suffage. Darn it!

I only use Twitter to build backlinks as it's

still regarded as an important social signal.

In my experience, Twitter seems to be great for entertainment/news

niche and is a poor choice for IM/MMO.

All my "real" followers are not responsive and

the "fake" ones are usually posting something, somewhere.

This is wall street now, not silicon valley. In silicon valley they would take a hit, wall street cares about profit and earnings.

No it isn't... social signals were thought to be likes, shares, retweets, etc. not links that come from it lol. Matt Cutts put it on blast last week.

To the OP: My suggestion is to follow some people who you would consider competitors and see how they use it. Maybe you'll get better ideas.

I think regardless of the platform; whether it be Facebook or Twitter, your content strategy (or lack of it) will determine your success. Read about the Maersk social media story - it's probably a good way for most companies to use social media i.e for storytelling above anything else.

Twitter is a great social platform, however, it's a tricky one. You have to stay active daily and recruit new followers all the time if you want it to be active. One of my most successful campaigns are from twitter.
