Why use Facebook likes when you can just use an opt-in page?

I am about to start running some ads on Facebook promoting my own product and really like that now the "Like Ads" are in the news feed.

Bu I've been wondering is it even beneficial to up Facebook "likes" when I can just send them to an opt-in page and get their email address? It wouldn't be so confusing, but FB organic reach on fans is about 12%. So would I not be paying twice?

Instead, couldn't I just get the email address and promote my product that way? Or the likes beneficial to build social proof and some virality for page posts.

Would like some perspectives on this one because this is really racking my brain.

Exactly what I have bolded above. Your emails will only go out to your subscribers, unless some of them actually take the extra step to forward it to someone, so there is basically zero chance of an email going viral.

If your fans like, comment, or share your posts on FB, then some of their friends/fans will see it in their feeds as well.

My two cents...I understand your concern, why would I bother with FB likes when I could keep communication through e-mail list. The trust, and relationship you can grow through social media creates potential viral campaigns, social proof, and allows your potential clients a greater understanding of teaching style and upcoming products. FB updates and messages left on your fan page consistently could have incredible engagement and involvement. Email broadcasts and follow-ups will never have the same interaction and engagement. That being said, it's tougher to "sell" on Facebook, whereas customers through your optin page have been qualified in a sense. Combine the two modes of attack for best results. Best of luck.

And let's be honest - just because someone opts in doesn't mean they're going to ever open an email you (or anyone) sends. That's the tough part.
So by building social credibility, accumulating likes, your message gets spread further. And FB is all about social pressure - if someone's friends like something, they're more likely to have a closer look themselves.

This is very bad thinking I have to add.

    1. Generating Likes is MUCH easier than an opt in
2 Depending on your fan page and how much value you give them, the potential of it going viral from the shared, comments and likes is amazing if done correctly.
    3. You can also get their emails later either from TABs or page post.

Also, another thing to note is Facebook is for social not for marketing. So keep in mind the audience and what they prefer doing. Clicking a LIKE button vs OPTing in etc.

Actually why limit yourself to either one.
Create a fan gated tab on your fan page with your optin form on it. Send the people there . .get the like and the opt in. Also you avoid annoying the people after they click your ad. (it has been shown time and time again that people dont like to be taken off Facebook when they click an ad)
