Looking For Traffic Strategies and Advice for this unconventional niche site.
The site is Weird Africa
It's normally called a Listicle type of site, though not strictly. i write about odd, bizarre stuff from africa.Check oddee.com for a comparison. Each article is around 1500 words and more with images, and it is written with a tinge of satire and humor.
The big listicle sites like cracked.com and oddee.com receive millions of visitors a day, with their catchy titles and funny/interesting articles. So clearly there is a fanbase for these type of sites.
The problem for me is, its a new site, and things like keyword research simply don't apply since am not selling anything in particular.I do have a facebook page with 400 members, and it is growing steadily.
I posted once on reddit, and got around 300 visitors in 30 minutes. But as some of you may know, reddit is quite strict about promoting your site and you have to wait for people to vote your posts up.you just cant spam the forums with your links or you will get banned the same day.I have not tried digg, because it seems only the major news site make it to the front of the site.
I did facebook ads, and i did get a number of visitors, but either my targeting was bad or facebook traffic simply doesnt convert well. The time spent on the site from facebook visitors was like 3-5 minutes. And bounce rates were around 70%. Compared to reddit where the bounce rates were less than 40% and time spent on the site was more than 15 minute with multiple pages being viewed by visitors.
i have adsense on the site and so far i've made about 5$ in 3 days since i put the code. From around 200-250 visitors a day.
If my site was simply a humor site with nothing but funny photos, then i guess facebook ads would have worked better.Could the high bounce rates be because people generally in facebook do not have time to read long articles and just need instant gratification? or could it be that the targeted age group for my ads was just wrong and the kind of articles i am writing are more suited for an older audience? ( i targeted 18-39 years, )
And lastlly what other monetization option would work well to compliment the adsense ads?
Thanks guys and i am looking forward to hearing your views.
PS: Go easy on me.
