Social links don't really have any weight. They can create awareness, but they won't do much to increase your pagerank. Unless it's Google+. In that case it's possible there will be an effect.

Social media has been proven to improve ranks, they are a form of backlinks that tell Google you are being shared, in my opinion its the future. Its a backlink with people behind it. Im sure Google can determine how natural they are gained.

My blog posts that get lots of shares, often start ranking for REALLY good keywords. From that experience I would say yes, organic social sharing is awesome for seo.

I believe there are some social sites that are dofollow and they do bring some SEO value. Also, the traffic that social sites bring may be good for SEO as well.

If you mean the text field where you can enter your main website from let's say twitter, facebook, youtube, linkedin, etcetera, then YES.

They actually do help improve your site's rankings.

This distinction is a good point especially since
links in news feeds are eventually pushed down
      to the bottom.

Not to say that those links couldn't be crawled.

But I always wondered which of the two
held more weight. Your main website should
      be there anyway, right?

      Darkcode1,

You're darn right, this infographic helps.

Makes you take a whole new perspective to
Facebook ads. More likes - more authority - more PR.

Socail media is definetly a great way to improve not only web traffic, but it also helps in improving ranking, but it doesn't help in PR.
Google plus links are dofollow so they are more effective.

    Thanks,
In short, if you talk about link-spamming, it doesn't and shouldn't have any weight in true sense. Otherwise, it has real value. Because it shows how many sites refers your content as valued and worthy besides you get real targeted visitors which ultimately helps your page or site rank higher in the search results.

Links from social media sites helps you to get traffic, but they dont count towards your SEO, in the infographic you can see that they experiment claims they ranked just with social media, but the term is so weak that they may even rank without doing anything, they have no competition whatsoever.

If the links are placed in good places and they provide helpful information for social media people then they can improve your traffic (or clients if is the case)
