Direct Messaging on Twitter

I am fairly new to social media marketing, and I was wondering if anyone has any details about the results of using direct messages on Twitter for social media marketing? Recently, I added a few people on Twitter and they messages me a DM along the lines of "Thanks for following, make sure to check us out on Facebook ... link". Without even thinking about it, I clicked the link and liked their page- two clicks.

I would be interested in some real metrics if anyone has any- what is the click rate of using DM's like that? Is it only good for FB? What about Google+ and Linkedin?

Is there a specific tool you use? I have played around with SproutSocial TweetAdder and TweetGuru (12 DM limit).
