Google+ and who to follow?

Hi,
I need a bit of a pointer on starting up with twitter and Google+, if anyone can help point me in the right direction that would help immensely as i'm a little bit stuck.
I could be being really stupid here but I have just opened up a google+ account and a twitter account for a food recipe blog that I have started. Now in Twitter it has asked me to follow people, who should i follow? Do I follow other food blogs with people writing recipes, do i follow restaurants & bars, do i follow chefs, do i follow foodie blogs, or do i just follow the lot? This question is the same for google+ what cycles do i follow, the same as above? The reason i ask is that the people that I want to read my tweets, join my Google+ and read my blog are people who want to learn from someone that they believe in and my expertise and by me following the above are they not just the same people that are talking about the same thing as me i.e. competition, no? Or have i got it all wrong?
Thanks in advance for any comments or help.

HI sounds like you have a good plan there. If you want to attract people who read other food blogs, then you want to find what these top blogs/twitter accounts are, then just search for people who follow them.

For example just type 'recipes' in the search and look at the top results and then target their followers. You really want to target 'power' followers, (these are people who have more friends than followers) because they re more likely to follow you back.

I've not used google+ so much but if you want any pointers on twitter just let me know.

When it comes to twitter, you should follow 1) Whatever YOU personally find interesting
    and
    2) Actual real people that tweet about food. Not popular ones with MILLIONS of followers, but average users of twitter.com. Interacting with them and replying to their tweets might bring visitors to your blog and increase the number of people who work about it.

The most important thing is to NOT BE SPAMMY. People will see right through your mass-follow technique if you abuse it.

Akash47 would that apply even if you were trying to create a brand and not tweeting as a person? I get the spammy stuff and following other interests but as a recipe blog would be tweeting recipes, would that her spamming? Thanks

Don't worry about competition, think coopetition. :-) You want to follow people who are influencers, thought leaders, experts in the area (or related topics) to your own specialty. With Google+, search for relevant communities, join them, and participate actively (think forum commenting). The key is to join the conversations that are related to your area, and keep adding value with your content.

I'd also recommend using a tool like Buffer or Hootsuite (both have free versions that should work for you) to batch your posts.

And finally, another critical success factor, be consistent! (above tools will help).

    Good luck!

They help you manage you or your client's social media accounts, ie, Facebook, Twitter, etc, all under one roof. Go to their sites and read about it. Their info you should be enough to get you a good idea of what they are about. Links below:

        https://bufferapp.com/

Edit: Anyone know why the hyperlinks didn't catch the title for each page?

    PCR100,
Hopefully you got your questions answered by the good responses so far, but I wanted to add my 2 cents in too.
For who to follow, I agree with Palmvalley and akash47. Follow the BIG influencers in your Food/Recipe niche. Then look at the other people that follower that same big influencer and see who is retweeting, favoriting and replying to that influencers' tweets and follow them too.
You probably will get some follows back from some of the people you follow, so what I do is I either thank them for the follow or just somehow acknowledge them.
Then, again like Palmvalley said, PARTICIPATE, PARTICIPATE, PARTICIPATE in the conversations. Give your 2 cents. Reply to someone else that replied to the original tweet. If you like what someone said, favorite it(they'll get notified that you favorited their tweet).
And after you get "accepted" into the big influencers twitter audience, you'll notice people will start following you, without you following them first.

On Google+, ask around to be included in a Google+ circle of food/recipe lovers or ask others to provide you with a 'shared circle' of people who are interested in food. Then, add these people and many will add you back.
