Facebook Fan Page = List Building

So I was thinking isn't having a Facebook fan page the same as building a email list? Let me elaborate.......If I were going to go about building a list I just direct the traffic to a squeeze page and collect their emails. I would then give then build a relationship with this list, then once their comfortable I would go for the kill with whatever I'm promoting and hopefully It will convert. Now with the fan page I'm not collecting emails just Facebook User IDs. So instead of emailing them I would just update my status and encourage engagement effectively building a relationship. Just like with the list building I would go for the kill and hopefully whatever I'm promoting will convert, So what do you think? Do you guys do this? and which is more effective?

hmm things like creative you may try but there is a "BUT" fb users are for entertainment and not for any professional type of ...... so if you need just visitor you may try this but if you need selling something then the conversion will be low ... whatever good luck ...

For me it's a they are different. Most successful marketers are doing step by step process.

Facebook Fan Page --> Email Opt-in --> Landing Page.

Facebook Fan Page (They offer free stuff to have their email entered)
Email Opt-in (Follow-up freebies / Sent a landing page orrfers)

No thats not very good. You will be at the mercy of Facebooks edge rank. What you need to do is put a squeeze page, or a contests, deal, whatever on your fan page. Then funnel traffic to that so you can get their actual email.

      This!

Am doing this now. You never truly own your FanPage.

Use your FP to funnel them into your list.

You've got the basic idea down... and they're 2 separate platforms; fan page & email list.

The key with a fan page isn't necessarily to focus on just growing the fan page... yes, grow it, but you want to try as best as possible to funnel your fans to your email list.

Aside from that, promote using your email list as well as promote on your fan page... don't neglect either/or.

If you don't mind me asking what's a edge rank? I was also thinking about just focusing on building up my fanpage that encourages engagement and I figured once I had that I would create a blog and direct traffic there. To me it's not about making money first, I'm looking to make a genuine connection first and I figure the money will come from there

I would build up the page through awesome content, a likes campaign...etc

Then filter them in a variety of ways onto your list.

There you can put them through your funnel, upsell them, cross sell them to a members area at some point if you wish. That members area could be hosted on your blog.

Of course, you want to make sure you have traction in your chosen niche too.

Make sure you research the demographics of your audience.

You want to build a community in effect.

Edge rank is an algorithm that Facebook uses to determine if a particular post is shown to a particular user. Think about this if I have 500 friends posting status updates, and I have liked 150 or so fan pages. Facebook cant show me everything posted by everyone. So it uses edge rank to determine mathematically what posts to show. The thing is that Facebook has been slowly and artificially lowering the edge rank for fan pages to entice the page to spend money on ads and boosted posts.

Facebook is a poor substitute for Email marketing.

Ill be 100% honest. Facebook, at least fan pages, are becoming less and less of a useful marketing tool every day.
